AKA: L’appartement
Year: 1996
Directed by: Gilles Mimouni
Starring: Vincent Cassel (Max), Monica Bellucci (Lisa), Romane Bohringer (Alice), Sandrine Kiberlain (Muriel), Jean-Philippe Écoffey (Lucien)
Country: France, European Cinema
Language: French (Eng Subs)
Runtime: 01:51:45
Genres: Mystery

Plot – Spoilers:
Max appears to be in the prime of his life. His career is taking off, he’s getting married soon to his boss’s sister and the boss thinks he’s hot shit. While meeting with clients at a cafe, he fleetingly sees an ex whom he broke up with in odd circumstances. Seeing her brings a flood of memories and he becomes obsessed with finding her, even canceling his business trip to Japan.

L’appartement veers sometimes into romcom territory and is even a bit silly at times. It is however an important film in modern French cinema for its style and noirish touches.

L’appartement was remade in English as Wicker Park.

This movie is perfect, it shows the selflessness & selfishness of love at the same time, and how fate & destiny intertwine. The ending makes this film deserve its spot on effedupmovies.com.

I love film noir, and this was classic film noir – from the filtered photography, stylish outfits, to the mysterious music and how good looking are the actors! Major plot twist – wasn’t expecting the ending, but liked it.

Not acting at all? Cassel and Bellucci have such strong chemistry between them than transpires to the screen trough their private lives imo
