Plot – Spoilers:
Anney is a young mother with an illegitimate daughter Bone. She’s obsessed with removing the ‘bastard’ out of Bone and goes through a couple of marriages with men in the hope of finding love and security.
Anney’s second marriage with Glen turns out disastrous for Bone though. While Glen tries hard to keep Anney happy, he also carries a massive chip as a failure in his father’s eyes. To him, Bone is an easy, at-hand outlet for his frustrations. But it’s not just the violence that interests him about Bone.
Controversial Scenes:
Jean Malone was 12 at the time of the movie’s release. And so the two molestation scenes garnered a lot of controversy. According to director Anjelica Huston, Jean Malone and Ron Eldard worked for a month with a stunt coordinator to figure out how they’d eventually enact the scenes.
Based on the autobiography of the same name, this story is heartbreaking yes, but, although it’s not elaborated on in the film like it is in the book, it’s also a story about resilience. Bone’s resilience. She eventually left, went to college, became an incredible author, and had a successful life. She battled alcoholism (I mean, I’d be more surprised if she didn’t have any addiction issues) in her younger years, but eventually got sober and went into recovery. And in closing, I’d just like to add, if anyone ever did that to my kid, any of it, I’d send the kids to a family member, pretend I forgave the abuser, then sit in wait with my strait razor, and slit their throat in their sleep…and mutilate them after. Eyes, tongue, and dick (or vagina, I’m not biased or naive. I know it’s not just men who do this kind of shit) which I’d stuff down their throat. But that part would just be for my own fun though. 😂 The killing, that would be for my child, and any and all children that ever did or ever would cross their path. Good but shocking film.
It’s a shame the width of the film has been stretched to nearly 5:3 making all the faces look shorter and wider. It’s showing on YouTube correctly in 4:3, but slightly cut.

This is a really tragic story. Speaking as a Southerner, I can tell you without fear of contradiction that some of the most fucked stories placed to film are from my neck of the (back)woods.
