Plot – Spoilers:
The Girl Next Door is based on the Jack Ketchum novel of the same name. Two teenage girls Meg and Susan lose their parents in an accident and go to live with their aunt Ruth and three male teenage cousins in a suburban town. The story is narrated from the perspective of a neighboring kid, now all grown up, who at the time had a crush on Meg.
Ruth is a weird woman with misogynistic views and sees Meg and Susan as subservient beings with no rights. What begins as stepmotherly treatment spirals into a type of slavery before degenerating into the worst possible abuse of Meg and Susan at the hands of Ruth and her young boys.
Favorite scenes:
The torture scenes of Meg from the perspective of Ruth’s young boys growing to enjoy the torture and sexual power they are given, throws some insight into how humans if allowed by law (in this case their mother, Ruth) can quickly abandon morality for their personal gratification especially of a sexual nature.
An American Crime starring Catherine Keener and Ellen Page was also based on this true story of the torture and murder of Sylvia Likens.
Somewhat hard to watch. Auntie Ruthie, absolutely pure evil.

There is another movie called the Afflicted (2011) about another very abusive mother toward her daughters.
Horrific but the horror didn’t stop there. The final horror was the decision by the parole board to set free that evil woman after about 20 years. She was alive and free, and her victim never got to live a full life.
How can that be right? Anyone who is deliberately responsible for ending a persons life should either be executed or spend ALL of the rest of their life behind bars. The legal system is an ass.

This movie is based on a true story about the slow torture of Sylvia Likens that happened in 1965. Believe it or not, what Sylvia went through in real life is far worse than anything that happened in this film. Its a super fucked up story and several people have covered it on YouTube if you can stomach it.

Anyone that questions the boy didn’t get how he was a victim too. His life was in danger as well and he was traumatized by the constant escalating abuses. She even threated her life as well as his. The acts She perpetrated upon the kids were so sadistic and manipulative that she was able to control her children and the victims as well. If you were going to blame the narrator, you could do the same for the sister as well. She was guilty I suppose for letting her sister take punishments for her? She let her big sister go back for her? You people that made ignorant comments obviously never have suffered trauma or know nothing of human psychology. I am forgetting however this is the comments section on effed up movies after all and I expect to see ignorant comments and trolls.
This story was well done, very tragic, and a real horror story that still happens to this very day in this county. If you watched it and were unmoved you are a monster and should be stricken sterile.
Serbian Film, Audition, Human Centipede, Cannibal Holocaust, Grotesque, Saw, Hostel. All films I’ve watched casually, with a smile on my face while eating dinner through all the gory scenes. Even true stories like 3096 days, Cleveland abduction, things that I know that logically I should be much more disgusted at. I might be messed up in the head but I get a certain sick twisted pleasure out of watching them.
Somehow, this much more tame film is the first I just found uncomfortable to sit through. I’m not sure if its just the more relatable kind of abuse, or how seriously it takes it, or how there’s no levity or the fact that the characters are literally children that actually look like children. I just found it hard to watch.

I love how the comments keep bleating on about this being based on a true story like that means anything. Sure aspects of the situation and setting are similar, but the rest is pure artistic interpretation and doesn’t have to be based in fact on any level. Hell, The Amityville Horror was based on a true story, but the film was entirely made up.
I hated this. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not a badly acted or produced film. It’s just I can’t stand to see a nice pretty young girl tortured physically and emotionally so realistically. I don’t see any reason for someone to watch this movie twice. So in a sense I am saying there is no need to watch it once. However I will not rate it either way as I am biased towards the subject material.

It is obvious that those that hate The fake David character don’t know shit about the overall tolerance the U.S. had of parental rule in those days. It was nothing like it is now! Family rule was everything and in the real story, it was the adults that willfully ignored what they thought was “strange”. Unlike now , where kids get away with just about every damn thing, children and adolescents could get the living hell knocked out of them for things that kids say these days. It meant very little as long as there were no marks. The only people that could intervene in a situation like this with no reprisals were the local clergy. And they didn’t in this case…So much for the blessings of christian privilege! (It is also worth noting that this incident that occurred took place at a time when child protective services were a relatively new thing. Before that, children were actually protected by the ASPCA! Had it not been for the valiant efforts salvation army founder Pearl S Buck, they wouldn’t have even had the ASPCA looking out for them. Bottomline: Charles Dickens wasn’t really writing fiction. Sad reality of those times.
Dude, this is based on a true story and the main character was a cinematic vehicle used to tell the story. Regrettably, Ruth was not killed. Her real name was Gloria Banishewski and if the fake character David pissed you off, just think about Gloria/Ruth committing this brutal murder, being charged with 1st degree murder, and getting paroled after only 22 years! The movie borders on unwatchable, but it was almost tame compared to the real story! The victim’s name was (in real life) Sylvia Likens. Brace yourself if you decide to read the actual story!
How come no one has mentioned that this is a true story? This film is based on the 1965 torture-murder of 16 y/o Sylvia Likens in Indianapolis Indiana. With VERY FEW liberties taken with the original story. I hate to say it, but this film gave me more sleepless nights than the murder of a close friend that happened around the same time. No spoilers, but I promise that you will wish you could jump through the screen and kill everyone but the victims! Watch it and then go read the actual case’s trial manuscripts; most of the perpetrators are dead, but after seeing this and studying the real case, you might be tempted to find the sole surviving killer who lives under an assumed name. It wouldn’t hurt my feelings if someone acted on those impulses to the point of doing an actual Dexter on the vile cunt. Just sayin’.

This film is very good at making you pity the main character. You can feel how fucked up the behavior of the antagonist is, and this feeling only doubles when you learn it was based on a true story.
A very tasteful and non edgy “fucked up” film, I highly recommend.
