Plot – Spoilers:
A scenic countryside Polish village serves as a rustic canvas of nothingness for the lonely lives of a few people there. Principally it’s about Adam, a closeted homosexual priest recently transferred from Warsaw and under whose initiative the parish has organized a reform centre for boys on the cusp of adulthood. Some of them are also closeted, but Adam tries his best to restrict his feelings for them to bathtub faps and instead resorts to sprinting early every morning, which he considers a form of prayer and penance for being gay. There’s also a dissatisfied housewife there who gauges her own attractiveness by the success or failure of her ability to seduce men of religion.
This is an appropriately slow and idyllically interesting take on hiding in a Catholic closet while struggling with the apparent dilemma of being a good person while also being gay.
A closeted parish priest ends up having hardcore gay butt sex with one of his flock, a young man who is part of the “dead end kids” gang of troubled teens/tweens who have had skirmishes with the law. This doesn’t sit well with the faithful and the priest ends up getting transferred for the umpteenth time. True love finds a way in the end. This one isn’t as down and dirty and in your face as William Freidkin’s “Cruising” (1980) starring Al Pacino and Paul Sorvino but it will have enough to get closeted homosexual’s (like Cole) pulses to race. 4 stars.
Mixed feelings. The guy who liked the Priest is clearly not a kid, but he is young. I’m thinking like 19 maybe 20. Clearly an age gap, but sometimes that isn’t bad it just depends. As far as that goes he also pursued the older man. That is important because there is no grooming or coercion. So on the surface I’d raise an eyebrow and be observant, but wouldn’t assume yet. The problem occurs in two ways. To secretly engage in a gay relationship while preaching to others that it is wrong is a level of hypocrisy I don’t like at all. As everyone with a functional brain knows being gay isn’t a problem anyway, but some Churches are still stuck in that past… just change denominations. Next is the power dynamic. As a Church leader in rural areas you have power, and that guy may not have been a child but he hasn’t lived or experienced enough to handle power imbalance and things like love vs idolization. Infatuation with authority and the genteel is easy when you are young and lost. The priest didn’t target him or use that as an exploitative angle… but it’s unsettling. Lots of angles to look at.
The fact it made me ponder all of those things? 10/10 phenomenal movie!
