About (Spoilers):
Based partly on the serial killer, Richard Chase, it focusses heavily on the post-arrest trial events. There are two cuts on EUM (this is of better viewing quality).

William Friedkin’s Rampage was originally made in 1987, but the production company DEG went bankrupt. Five years later in 1992 it was finally released in US theatres, but by this time, Friedkin had re-edited it, cutting out bits, adding a scene and changing the ending. So if you like the movie, you might want to watch both. This cut is different from the Original Cut in its opening, ending and edited-out scenes (not violence-related), but includes an extra scene of Charlie buying the gun used in the first set of killings.

It’s not a bad movie, but it’s such a movie . . . Back stories, character development of killer and prosecuter and so forth, social and political exegesis . . . It does everything a “movie” is supposed to do, which is how most people think things should be. But like that poor Victorian bastard wrote before he killed himself, “All this buttoning and unbuttoning” . . . It’s just so tiresome.

Prior to this the only Friedkin film I’d seen was The Exorcist & i hadn’t really gave him much thought apart from that, but holy shit this was a fucking awesome movie.
Decided to check it out after reading the synopsis here & learning it was based on serial killer “The sacramento vampire” Richard chase, something i was very familiar with.
I kinda hate it when they make different cuts of a movie, always pisses me off as i want to watch the better version or most uncut at least, so i agree with OMH this was definitely the best version & thanks EUM for explaining the differences, those extra scenes in the OG were just fillers & this is the quality version, best movie ive seen on here for a while & i look foward to looking up Friedkins other films, thanks!

I figured that it wasn’t fair to all of the EUM viewers that I did not provide a full analysis of the “Rampage” films so I would like to rectify that now. “Rampage” is one of my favorite Friedkin films and both versions I would give 5 stars but I do like the 1992 “cut” version better. Beyond a shadow of a doubt, William Friedkin was an expert film maker. Casting a film was one of Friedkin’s many strengths as demonstrated in this film. Reece’s lawyer (played by Nicholas Campbell of “The Dead Zone” (1983) fame) is actually more likeable than the D.A. (played by Michael Biehn of “The Terminator” (1984) fame) and I am sure Friedkin cast it that way purposely. Everything Friedkin has done in a film had significance, such as the dialog not being in sequence with the actor’s speaking. For instance, when Chris McNeil says “Oh, Captain Howdy” out of sequence in “The Exorcist” (1973) but from there on the dialog is lip synced perfectly with Reagan and the demon voice, or in this film when the priest’s voice doesn’t match the speaking. Another one of Friedkin’s strengths is in the editing room. Not only was he an expert at matching atmospheric music to scenes, such as when Reece’s mother (Grace Zabriskie) is on the screen, but he was very good at dropping subtle things in that could go unnoticed but may be important. At about 47:00 Anthony the D.A. is speaking to Mr. Tippetts and… Read more »
