Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (2002)

Option 1Can't Watch?

Wait 30secs. Movie still not playing? Click the "Can't Watch?" tab.

If the movie didn't load, it means you are being blocked by a security service we use. This can happen for a number of reasons.

Click this first

A new tab will open and a basic security check like a captcha will be performed. After completing the check, close that page and return here.

Refresh this page. Wait 30 secs. The movie should load and you can just hit play.

If it still doesn't play, Click here to watch the movie

The movie should now start playing in a new tab of your browser or begin downloading to your device. This option has the minor disadvantage that English-language movies with optional subtitles in the movie player will not include these subs with this method.

The new system here has been designed keeping in mind even people with low internet speeds sub-8mbps. Even if you have a really bad connection, you should still be able to watch the movie without any issues if you:
Start the movie. Pause it. Wait for 30-45 seconds. Start playing again.

This 'Can't Watch' method really only works if it's your specific device/browser that's interfering with the player. There is no real advantage of speed here. Or if there is a temp network glitch or read lag from the server disk.

If you're still having problems, try using 'Incognito mode' in your browser. On iPhones, especially older ones, use Chrome instead of Safari. Might help.

IMPORTANT: Please make sure that the newly opened tab is not an ad popup asking you to download some software or whatever. Close any such popups and don't download any software - those are ads. Nothing is needed to be done by you other than to complete the security check which is often automated.

AKA:
Directed by: Park Chan-wook
Starring: Ha-kyun Shin (Ryu), Bae Doona (Ryu’s girlfriend), Song Kang-Ho (Yu-sun’s father), Bo-bae Han (Yu-sun), Ji-Eun Lim (Ryu’s sister)
Country: South Korea
Language: Korean (Eng Subs)
Runtime: 02:01:21
Genres: Kidnapping, Siblings-Family, Revenge

Plot – Spoilers:
This was the first in Park Chan-wook’s Vengeance Trilogy, the others being, Oldboy and Lady Vengeance.

A deaf-mute Ryu labours away at a brutal factory that leaves him senseless by the end of day. The one thing that keeps him toiling away, is the money he’s been able to save up for his sister who needs a kidney. But desperation soon sees Ryu slip into the worlds of organ trafficking and kidnapping.

The film continually flips who or what Mr Vengeance is. And in the hands of the Korean master of violent humour, this is a mustwatch for his fans.

The problem I have with Asian movies like this one is that they start off kind of goofy and comedic. Later they take on a more serious tone but then I’m not sure if I should be waiting for the punch line. The first half of the film is a goofy comedy and the second half is a serious revenge drama. Some of it is good but I just hate that goofy, corny comedic bullshit that is really unnecessary for a movie about a young girl that is kidnapped and murdered and her father seeks revenge on the killers. 3 stars. Hey Asian film makers – cool it with the goofy, corny comedic bullshit.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. One of the masterpieces in all of filmmaking in my opinion.

Yeah – fuck me – I gave it a 5 star. I found that very hard to watch, maybe because it’s constant moral debasement. Oldboy was fun, this isn’t fun – it’s brutal..

Park Chan-wook is a sophisticated artisan, contriving roborant equilibrium of verism and ubiquity. This film is resplendent, I felt faithfully immersed and ebullient.

This is about the most dangerous things of them all – self-righteousness. Everybody’s always so fucking sure that they “lived an honest life”, and they’ve never done anything wrong. The sheer stupidity of it and the insanity when they go all the way… Well done, Park Chan-wook.

Gospodin what a wonderful trilogy. Almost as good as Kitano’s Outrage. Love these Asian approach to the violence. It always has a touch of romance in it.
