Plot – Spoilers:
Samson strangles his girlfriend and leaves her body by the river. He then brags about it to his friends at school and takes them to the new tourist spot. The friends aren’t sure how to react and spend the next few days confused about their feelings and mostly quiet. One of them though is hot on the situation and as the self-appointed leader of the group, takes it upon himself to bundle Samson away from the law.
River’s Edge is a quiet and powerful portrayal of shared numbness among disparate, yet interesting characters. There’s Feck, the one-legged local dealer who kills his loneliness with a blowup doll. He carries intimidating stories from his past, but feels inadequate in the presence of Samson’s boisterous psychopathy. In Tim, there’s the searing resentment of a kid’s ambitious growth hormones stunted by the body they’re festering in. And of course, Layne – memorably played by Crispin Glover – who thinks he’s part of some kind of novel or movie.
In River’s Edge, the adults are obsessed with why the kids aren’t reacting the way they would. What gets everyone is the lack of obviously-displayed empathy, which is probably something users of this site would identify with – now, or from a past phase.
Sweet jesus on his tricycle, Crispin Glover is such an atrocious actor that he even makes Keanu Reeves come across like some kind of Lawrence Olivier.
I wonder if River’s Edge by Kyoko Okazaki is somewhat inspired by this movie, given the shared name and corpse situation.
Super exaggerated and inaccurate, but entertaining, mainstream Hollywood retelling of the murder of Marcy Renee Conrad by Anthony Jacques Broussard. Broussard killed Conrad and showed 10 high school kids her body who remained quiet for 2 days, but most of the rest of the story in the film is made up. Brossard had sex with the corpse after he killed her, which is not mentioned, and Broussard was not shot dead as was suggested in the film. He is still alive. In fact, he was paroled in 2023 and could be your next door neighbor. My favorite part is when Samson/John is telling Feck how alive he felt when he killed her. Samson/John says “Did you feel that way Feck?” and Feck says “Not quite, man.” Good performances all around and Dennis Hopper is just great. 4 and a half stars.
Roxana Zal, who plays “Maggie” in the film, has been in a few noteworthy fucked up films including “Something About Amelia” (1984) about a dad (played by creepy Ted Danson) who is molesting his 13 year old daughter and “Shattered Spirits” (1986) about a father who is a raging violent alcoholic expertly portrayed by Martin Sheen.

Fantastic film I remember seeing this in an arthouse cinema I Liverpool mid 80′ s & somehow it resonated with me.
For this being based on a true story & classified as a Drama/Crime movie, it really lacked any heaviness, suspense, or emotional investment & it felt more like a Comedy. It’s disappointing & I don’t understand the high rating here.
Crispen Glover’s character just seemed liked a class clown that you couldn’t take serious. Dennis Hopper, with his blow up doll, crazy stories, how he used & talked about his gun… added to the feel of this being a Comedy. With the Comedy type movie feel, not one situation felt suspenseful.
There should’ve been a build up of who the person was behind the corpse & her interactions family & friends… then show her murder & it’s affect on her family. There was no way the audience is going to feel nearly as appalled, if at all, for her friends not immediately reporting her death… which should’ve been the main goal of the producer.
Having watched it after a very long time it felt a bit moralistic to me. It could easily loose the school room scenes and I think I would have been happier with Keanu getting killed in the end. Dennis is tops of course and was always the main reason anyone paid attention to the film originally.

Entertaining enough.. But.. some really bad acting.. poor use of music in spots.. seems poorly made in ways. Crispy Glover acts basically like he dis as Mcfly… apparently that’s how he always acts? The same weird expressive way he talks and even moves
