Until the Light Takes Us looks back on the early Norwegian black metal scene. Through interviews with some of the founding members, it tries to understand what black metal meant to them and how it was taken out of their control and spun into something else.
A lot of the discussion focuses on Varg’s murder of Euronymous, but Fenriz is around too, to shift things back to the music. While there are a few prominent omissions like Ihsahn, the docu does a fairly good roundup of the others and includes Faust and members from Mayhem and Immortal. There’s also a gore-performance by Frost (however dubious it may or may not be).
This is the 4th time I’ve seen this fascinating documentary and it gets more intriguing as time goes on. It is great to hear what happened in the early Norwegian black metal scene from the people who actually started it instead of from some watered down fantasy version like “Lords of Chaos” (2018), which portrayed Øysten “Euronymous” Aarsten as a sort of nice guy/hero to try to propel the acting career Rory Culkin. I was really in to Mayhem, Darkthrone and Burzum and there are several other really good documentaries about the Norwegian black metal scene, one being “Pure Fucking Mayhem” (2008). 5 stars.

They try to make it all about the church arsons, but they actually killed people. So this ideology varg talks about, the guy is totally hypocritical. I’m just saying this so people don’t follow those guys like they’re making any sense. But i don’t judge at all, i’m a big hypocrite myself, and as such, i can tell they just come up with what is aligned with their immediate interest

Fenriz is a really good guy, I feel so warm towards him when I first saw him and learned about Darkthrone. Chill and goofy dude ! I wish to meet him. And as for the whole documentary and all about the black metal shit that had occured in the 90’s, it’s a bit mixed of horrifying but fascinating at the same time. You know they’re edgy, and evil as hell but you can’t stop searching more about them. I really second what my cool guy fenriz said, it shouldn’t have become trendy. That is why some bm elitis, or gatekeepers exists.
Good documentary about the second wave of Black Metal in Norway,the main protagonist is Fenriz from Darkthrone, but there are a lot of other involved people talking about that time of music, church burnings and murder.
must see if you are a black metal fan, as it covers the subject matter very well, unlike the terrible Lords of Chaos. Fenriz is a cool dude
This movie is really interesting, especially if you’re really into the Norwegian/Scandinavian Black Metal scene/genre.
This movie/docu clears out things about BM”rumors”, the early/behind the scenes and about the “big names” of BM (ex: Euronymous, Varg, ,,,,).
It’s more “true” than “Lords of chaos”, which is more “romantized” (Idk how to described it).
But I recommand, very facinating and great !! >:^]
