Plot – Spoilers:
A woman at a gay club intrigues one of the men there when he finds her attempting to slit her wrists in the toilet. She further piques his gay cock when she vacuously sermonizes about the doomed virtues of women, while blowing him.
The woman then offers to pay him to sit around at her place, watching her verbalize thoughts on feminine existentialism. He takes up the offer and is also glad to know she has some nice whisky to help him through it all.
At first, it seems like all she wants is to get laid, but an artsy, philosophical lay, wrapped in depth and meaning. Existential sex. But after a while, the woman tugs at certain sensitive areas of the guy’s masculinity and when she finally unleashes some of her menstrual power, he finds himself cracking.
Strictly for Catherine Breillat fans. Perhaps even for rough-sex king, Rocco’s fans. Or maybe for those who think men and women are fundamentally incompatible. Or maybe for anyone, actually.

Decent typical French sexual-philosophical fare, and I was in awe of how gorgeous Amira Casar is…but damn was I distracted by how bad Rocco’s suit looks. It’s like watching “Stop Making Sense” as a porno.
This is a bloody good film. Some deep philosophical talk about homosexuality, women and sex, which are subjects that can be found in the other films I’ve seen by Catherine Breillat. This film would go in to the “Erotic” category under “Genres” if there was one. I’m going to give this one just a cunt hair over 4 stars and let me tell you why. I quit drinking a long time ago but after watching this film I’m craving a Bloody Mary big time.

Summary: Two unattractive people who have no reason to encounter each other exchange pseudointellectual viewpoints and proceed to have sex that neither of them would enjoy for the purpose of reinforcing the director’s aversion to sexual standards. “Vacuous” summarizes it nicely. I had to stop halfway because neither profundity nor carnal pleasure exists in this film.

I was hesitant going into this film because of the atrocious reviews, but was pleasantly surprised at how engaging and interesting it was. Many critics only seemed to draw attention to the period stuff and how disgusting that was, maybe it was only watchable for me since I’m female. Honestly some of these men need to grow up.
Would absolutely recommend. I’d also recommend Catherine Breillat’s other films, you can find a couple on here. I personally find her work fascinating, she’s one of the few directors willing to explore the (admittedly taboo) subject of female teenage sexuality (and female sexuality in general), a topic I can obviously relate to.
Some of the best and most intelligent of new French extremity.
