Plot – Spoilers:
Young Devon who’s recently had a heart surgery moves into a gated community with her upwardly mobile parents. She has no interest in making new friends though her father hopes she could be a bridge for building contacts in the wealthy community there. Instead, Devon secretly befriends the trailer-trash Trent, who mows lawns and is amused by her overactive imagination.
Their friendship is based on several similarities. They are both outsiders – he more of an outlier and she a minor outcast. The two are also similar in being acutely conscious of the constraints in their lives – he’s poor, she a dependent kid – and so they accept authority most of the time and pretend to care about what people want out of them, but often end up doing exactly what they want to do.
The class and age biases are strong around them and so there’s a temporal inevitability to their friendship. But while it lasts, it’s beautiful and moved along by an uplifting dobro piece from guitarist Clem Clempson that nails the purity and freedom of their relationship.

A little gem really.
It’s refreshing to see a movie where the guy isn’t portrayed as a deranged predator. Here we have a 25(?) ish year old Trent and a 10 year old Devon who start up a friendship. He treats her like a younger sister and never looks at her in any other way. Although girls mature faster she doesn’t seem to see him as anything other than a older friend as well.
As mentioned before. Beautiful.

This movie lacks in plausibility. I can’t see any (non deranged) man in his 20s or 30s naive enough to get that close to a 10 year old girl. No good could possibly come of it.

It’s the story of a rich irritating 10 year old girl who befriends a landscaper who is even more irritating than she is. As soon as I saw the name Sam Rockwell alarm bells started ringing but when I saw Kathleen Quinlan’s name as well I knew I was in for a super corny treat. What genre does this fall under? Horror? Military? Scars/Body Modification? Nunsplotation? Effed Up? Your guess is as good as mine. WTF? Really? 1 star. If you want to watch a super corny Hollywood bullshit fantasy written by some pampered rich fuck that eats Grey Poupon mustard by the jar this is the cornball shit of your dreams.
