House on Haunted Hill (1999)

Option 1Can't Watch?

Wait 30secs. Movie still not playing? Click the "Can't Watch?" tab.

If the movie didn't load, it means you are being blocked by a security service we use. This can happen for a number of reasons.

Click this first

A new tab will open and a basic security check like a captcha will be performed. After completing the check, close that page and return here.

Refresh this page. Wait 30 secs. The movie should load and you can just hit play.

If it still doesn't play, Click here to watch the movie

The movie should now start playing in a new tab of your browser or begin downloading to your device. This option has the minor disadvantage that English-language movies with optional subtitles in the movie player will not include these subs with this method.

The new system here has been designed keeping in mind even people with low internet speeds sub-8mbps. Even if you have a really bad connection, you should still be able to watch the movie without any issues if you:
Start the movie. Pause it. Wait for 30-45 seconds. Start playing again.

This 'Can't Watch' method really only works if it's your specific device/browser that's interfering with the player. There is no real advantage of speed here. Or if there is a temp network glitch or read lag from the server disk.

If you're still having problems, try using 'Incognito mode' in your browser. On iPhones, especially older ones, use Chrome instead of Safari. Might help.

IMPORTANT: Please make sure that the newly opened tab is not an ad popup asking you to download some software or whatever. Close any such popups and don't download any software - those are ads. Nothing is needed to be done by you other than to complete the security check which is often automated.

Plot – Spoilers:
A theme park owner and eccentric millionaire Steven Price, decides to throw a party on his wife Evelyn’s birthday. The setting is an abandoned mansion that used to be a hospital for the insane, run by a sadistic doctor and that was burnt down in 1931.

The theme of the party is survival and the five guests are offered 1 million dollars each if they can live out the night. Price and Evelyn’s marriage is on the rocks with either suspicious of the other. The 5 guests appear to be randomly chosen but as the night wears on, the mysteries of the house and the identities of the guests opens up more questions and doubts.

House on Haunted Hill is the remake of a 1959 horror classic and has some impressive visuals at times, that are in stark contrast to the rest of the movie that often plods along.

I was looking for a spooky and scary movie to watch and I saw the title “House On Haunted Hill” and I thought “Perfect!” About 10 minutes in I see smarmy Chris Kattan, the yuck-it-up funny boy, and my first thought was “This movie is going to suck eggs big time.” It’s a remake of the original 1959 movie and the story has been told a bunch of times, like in “The Twilight Zone” episode called “A Question Of Fear” starring Leslie Neilson. The rest of the cast all have that “Here I am, you lucky people” attitude that just sucks to watch. I couldn’t pick anyone to root for because I hated them all equally. It’s got the “A whisper to a scream” audio dynamics that drive me up a fucking wall, sucky jump scares a-plenty and super weak CGI effects. There is some stupid shit after the credit role if you make it that far. Bottom line: It’s too kooky, comedic and corny, and that takes the scary right out of it. 2 stars.

The most surprising thing about this movie was the fact that the black guy didn’t die first.

Of course Geoffrey Rush and Famke Jansen are amazing in this. Taye Diggs doesn’t get nearly enough time to shine as I would like. But the most upsetting thing about this is that they signed Jeffrey Combs and then gave away the perfect part for him to Chris Cattan of all people. As if this would be the movie to jump-start Cattan’s SeRiOuS AcTiNg CarReEr. This movie would be even more epic and forever have locked in its cult status if they’d just let Combs do his thing.
