Plot – Spoilers:
A sculptor, J, in his late 30s is apparently so seductive on the phone, a highschooler, Woori, is ready to drop her education and move in with him if he’ll have her. But before she can, her best friend, Y, frontruns her and offers all her three holes to J – that’s how the movie is chaptered early on: First Hole, Second Hole, Third Hole. This doesn’t affect the friendship between the girls though, once the aggrieved one has pounded the shit out of the betrayer. Maybe Woori also accepts Y’s reasoning that she wanted to lose her virginity soon before she was raped by some random. Over the next few J&Y encounters, Woori wants to know the juicy details and even helpfully applies a soothing balm on Y’s welted ass. It turns out, once J had run out of holes, a side of him that had driven his wife away had poppeed out that looked at sadism as an essential phase in a sexual session.
The SM relationship between J and Y is romantic and friendly. There is heartache every time they part and Y thinks she bends over because it makes J feel good. This continues until a particularly nasty beating when she finally cracks into tears. The relationship then climbs to another level where the couple are soon disconnected from the world and can no longer understand how people can work and do random non-sexual stuff.
Lies is based on a banned book that saw its author face jailtime. The two leads in first-time performances are quite fascinating as is the implication that a lot of things that go on are real. There is even a scene of the two friends fighting from a docu POV, where the actress playing Y can’t stop crying even after “Cut” is called. The inclusion of this scene was perhaps to indicate the unsimulation of all the sex and beatings.
It’s basically a soft core S & M skin flick but it has a story as well. The story is not very compelling at first but as the film goes on it gets weirder and more complicated. 3 stars.
There is something that I have noticed about Asian films. In scenes where Asians are eating, they almost always put chopsticks in their mouths and then use the same chopsticks to put food on someone else’s plate or they double dip the chopsticks in to the community food. Watch at around 33:15. I’ve seen stuff like this in lots of Asian films.

Y thinks heās a deadbeat loser. By the end of the movie, sheās going to join them in Brazil because she has burned every bridge back in Korea and needs somewhere to stay. Y is a disease. She ruins her friendship with Woori because she wants cock, but the same cock that Woori was on the prowl for. Y is completely unoriginal. She gets her brother killed while he is chasing her down, trying to prevent her from making too many bad decisions and ruining her life and dragging the family name through the mud.
