Sleepers (1996)

Option 1Can't Watch?

Wait 30secs. Movie still not playing? Click the "Can't Watch?" tab.

If the movie didn't load, it means you are being blocked by a security service we use. This can happen for a number of reasons.

Click this first

A new tab will open and a basic security check like a captcha will be performed. After completing the check, close that page and return here.

Refresh this page. Wait 30 secs. The movie should load and you can just hit play.

If it still doesn't play, Click here to watch the movie

The movie should now start playing in a new tab of your browser or begin downloading to your device. This option has the minor disadvantage that English-language movies with optional subtitles in the movie player will not include these subs with this method.

The new system here has been designed keeping in mind even people with low internet speeds sub-8mbps. Even if you have a really bad connection, you should still be able to watch the movie without any issues if you:
Start the movie. Pause it. Wait for 30-45 seconds. Start playing again.

This 'Can't Watch' method really only works if it's your specific device/browser that's interfering with the player. There is no real advantage of speed here. Or if there is a temp network glitch or read lag from the server disk.

If you're still having problems, try using 'Incognito mode' in your browser. On iPhones, especially older ones, use Chrome instead of Safari. Might help.

IMPORTANT: Please make sure that the newly opened tab is not an ad popup asking you to download some software or whatever. Close any such popups and don't download any software - those are ads. Nothing is needed to be done by you other than to complete the security check which is often automated.

Plot – Spoilers:
Four friends growing up in Hell’s Kitchen in the ’60s, come from unhappy families and find comfort in the time spent with one another. They indulge in what they believe to be harmless pranks while getting conflicting views from their surroundings on what their futures should be. There’s a young priest who once was a smalltime con and can relate to them and is therefore protective. He believes they could make their way out of their neighborhood by holding on to traditional values. In contrast, there are other voices that extol the virtues of being tough, while glorifying crime and those that run their neighborhood. Then one summer day, a prank gone wrong sends the boys for a year to juvie where the guards are sadistic and abusive.

Running at almost 2 and a half hours, some of the side characters get dialogues that appear designed to build the atmosphere, but instead end up dragging out scenes. That aside, the casting and particularly the first half, with Kevin Bacon around, keeps this interesting and effed up.

I found this movie mildly confusing. For example, why did the prosecutor volunteer to take this case when it meant the end of his career?

I just wrote a review on the movie “Serial Mom.” I want everyone who thinks “Sleepers” shouldn’t be on here to read it.

An interesting film, nothing whoa but watchable…I liked a very young Brad Pitt and De Niro was great as the priest.
the lady protagonist (Minnie Driver) was out of place though…

This is getting weird. Two movies in a row that are probably in my local library.

Before I get started with my views on “Sleepers” I just wanted to let you know that I watched half of a movie on EUM last night called “Hate Crime” (2012) before I shut it off. It was too amatuer for me. I like big budget well produced films. Star studded Hollywood films are usually going to contain some cornball Hollywood schmaltz and “Sleepers” is no exception. Robert De Niro may be suffering from stage 4 TDS now but that can’t take away from his past acting accomplishments. De Niro was perfect for the role of “Father Bobby” and he puts in a great performance, as does Dustin Hoffman as “Lawyer Snyder,” Vittorio Gassman as “King Benny” and, of course, Kevin Bacon as “Sean Nokes.” In fact, the whole cast does a good job but let’s talk about Minnie Driver for a minute. Driver’s role seemed like an after thought by the writer. As with other films I’ve seem with Minnie Driver, she is just kind of there (like in “Owning Mahoney” (2003)) and not necessarily integral to the story. Her role in “Sleepers” serves a purpose to bring some emotion in to scenes, such as when “Shakes” (Jason Patric, who is Jason Miller’s son – Miller played Father Damien Karras in “The Exorcist” (1973)) is confessing to Father Bobby about what happened at Wilkersons, but really no more than that. I’ve always thought the reunion scene was way too cornball as well. Minnie Driver has those cute puffy chipmunk… Read more »

Thanks for putting up but not for me :). The films are getting tamer.
