Plot – Spoilers:
Young Fando, growing up in a religious household during the Spanish Civil War, has fairly typical curiosities about death and heaven. These thoughts have been floating around a lot more of late ever since Father was taken away for his Communist beliefs. There’s also the accompanying worry that his beautiful mother whom he dotes on, will die soon too. Fando’s life gets eve more complicated when he finds out that Mother may have had something to do with the imprisonment of his father. In response, Fando invents surreal and sexual, often violent, fantasies about Mother and his aunt, who has an odd approach to her sexuality in the presence of the boy.
This is basically a boy missing his father with a rage against the authority of the elders around, but the dryness of his surroundings, religion and his mother ensure that he takes it all out through fantasies and private jokes like standing at the top of a hill and imagining flooding and drowning the town in his piss. Or stroking bats and lizards while spying on his aunt. Fando’s sexual imaginations are often hilarious, but after the death of his grandfather and following an onset of tuberculosis, they get more vivid and wild.

This is a depressing look into the life of a boy caught up in the Spanish Civil War with a Communist father and Falange (fascist) mother. This movie does not hold your hand. You need to know the basics of the setting and other information like Catholic rituals in order to fully understand what’s going on.
You spend a lot of time in the head of this boy who has wild and vivid fantasies. That’s probably the draw of the movie for most people watching, but I found them annoying after a while and just wanted to see what was happening in reality.
The subtitles are overly literal to the point of being confusing. There are weird phrases like, “holding the spigot with your right hand” that I’m guessing have some idiomatic meaning in French.
If you like kids and animals, this is an uncomfortable watch at times. There are several scenes of child abuse and what appears to be real animals being decapitated or maimed on-screen for no reason other than shock value.
The people who disliked this movie are deeply ignorant, plus they don’t understand art.
