Father Lankester Merrin during his ex-priest phase is an archaelogist and is sent to uncover the purpose of an ancient church that’s been excavated in Africa.
If people didn’t dig around, they wouldnt stumble upon shit seems to be the moral of this tale, as it turns out that the church was built at the spot where Lucifer fell from heaven.
Exorcist 4 is an attempt to explain the backstory to The Exorcist (1973).
They threw in a lot of good stuff in this one, i.e. Stellan Skarsgård, a Nazi angle, a voodoo tribe, a spooky church buried since the 15th century, a love story (yuk) etc. but this was always headed for a niche audience. The story is a bit too convoluted to be accepted by a huge audience like the original Exorcist film had. “The Exorcist” (1973) had massive appeal because it seemed like it was taking place at your neighbor’s house, not some catacombs in a buried church in Egypt. 3 stars.

I reiterate, Dominion is slightly better than this one. So the list from best to worst goes:
The Exorcist (normal and director’s cut) = Very Good
Exorcist: The Heretic = Good
Dominion = Ok
Exorcist: The Beggining = Meh
The Exorcist 3 (Theatrical Cut) = Terrible
I haven’t watched the director’s cut from the exorcist 3 but it’s probably the same crap.
Big Exorcist fan as you all may know..
This film is car to superior to the Dominion version.. it has a deeper story … It’s actually more believable and of course it’s not as good as the original or indeed the first version of legion BUT it has a great story and setting.
Some nice back story and some neat jumpy thrills … I like it .. I’m also that old I seen it on release in the cinema. . .
Saw this just a few weeks ago on another movie site and must say that its weak as piss and in no way comparable to the original. Save 2 hrs of your life and watch something else rather than trawl through this piece of cinematic garbage.
