This was the prequel originally planned and shot before studio fuckery led to a new film being reshot and released in 2004 – Exorcist: The Beginning. When that bombed, this was resurrected and released a year later to not much interest either. If you’ve seen the 2004 version, this one is probably a little more fleshed out while focusing lesser on the horror aspects.

I don’t mind this version tbh sure it’s plodding and a bit daft but it has a good kinda suspense to it.
I found the opening scene unbearably suspenseful. This was originally to be directed by John Frankenheimer but he died a few weeks before filming was scheduled to begin. He could have made this script work; he would have been able to wring such suspense from it. Also, the film’s financing was cut off before all of the CGI effects could be completed, which is why they look like shit.

Surprisingly, it was better than the 3rd movie, I’m not sure if it was better than the 4th, maybe I have to watch that one again, but aside from the shitty special effects, this one was less boring than I remember the 4th being. I guess the list from worst to best goes:
5- Exorcist III (awful)
4- Exorcist the beginning (boring)
3- This one (boring most of the time but had some entertaining parts)
2- Exorcist II: The Heretic (good)
1- The Exorcist (very good)
