Silenced (2011)

Option 1Can't Watch?

Wait 30secs. Movie still not playing? Click the "Can't Watch?" tab.

If the movie didn't load, it means you are being blocked by a security service we use. This can happen for a number of reasons.

Click this first

A new tab will open and a basic security check like a captcha will be performed. After completing the check, close that page and return here.

Refresh this page. Wait 30 secs. The movie should load and you can just hit play.

The new system has been designed keeping in mind even people with low internet speeds sub-8mbps. Even if you have a really bad connection, you should still be able to watch the movie without any issues if you:
Start the movie. Pause it. Wait for 30-45 seconds. Start playing again.

If you're still having problems, try using 'Incognito mode' in your browser. On iPhones, especially older ones, use Chrome instead of Safari. Might help.

IMPORTANT: Please make sure that the newly opened tab is not an ad popup asking you to download some software or whatever. Close any such popups and don't download any software - those are ads. Nothing is needed to be done by you other than to complete the security check which is often automated.

Plot – Spoilers:
The new art teacher at a Korean school for the deaf shockingly finds out that the glum faces of most of the kids, is but a meagre reflection of the horrible abuse they’ve been enduring from the staff for years. Though he’s mostly a passive person, with the help of an activist, he tries to do something about it.

Silenced is kind of similar to the Danish film Der Kommer En Dag. A real story, decades of abuse and a teacher trying to help.

The Real case:
Gwangju Inhwa School for the Deaf had a history of abuse from the sixties for five long decades, before a teacher finally managed to get a court case to happen in 2005. At least two kids were allegedly even murdered as part of the abuse in the ’60s. Due to the statutes of limitation expiring, many of the cases brought forward by the few victims that were willing to testify, were thrown out. The trials were a mess, as were the judgements. The teacher lost his job, the victims were kicked out, and some of the accused staff reinstated. Wider coverage was only given to the case after the book (The Crucible) and its film came out. Some laws were also eventually changed as part of the outcry.

SPOILERS – THIS WILL FUCK THE MOVIE UP FOR YOU IF YOU READ THIS BEFORE WATCHING IT

Young children at a school for the deaf get raped and beaten by their principal and teachers and later they get traumatized and humiliated in a courtroom by the judge and the lawyers. All of these people were entrusted to help these children. It’s a tough watch. The bitch counselor who was holding the girl’s head in the washing machine never got punished in any way. She probably got a promotion. The whole movie is very upsetting. Will there be justice someday? I doubt it. Really good film though. 4 stars.

After watching many base on true story movies of skorea, which is unthinkable for me because at the end it is always injustice for the victim. Really Felling petty for the people of korea looking at their laws. Law are runs throught money, if u have money, you are judge, you are government and you are everything. Need to change the law, if not poor people wil always be victim.

Not only did this movie see 10% or S. Korea attend but it DIRECTLY lead to the permanent closing of the school and re-trial of those who perpetuated the abuse. The statute of limitations was also lifted for those who abuse children and disabled women.
They don’t seem to talk about it but it’s widely believed that the school killed, and buried, multiple students. those kid’s didn’t get the justice they deserved. But at least they can rest in peace, knowing that such an evil facility won’t hurt another child again.

I thought that only in my country has a poor justice never thought that it also has the same to korea.
How are the kids right now, i hope they’re doing great and also thankfully that there are still good people around them

! Spoiler alert!

I just finished it and I have no words… I really expected everything to end well, especially with the overwhelming evidence that was the video… It’s crazy how people can be influenced by money and power and even forget their principles…. If the lawyer hadn’t been bribed, things could have been so different… Knowing that some of the attackers were reinstated in this school breaks my heart and makes me want to throw up. Children shouldn’t have to go through this.

! Attention spoiler !

this made me so angry. the worst part is that this happens in real life. it still does. its so unfair and ridiculous.. no one should go through this. people who think abusing in any way is right, deserves nothing in life. and i mean it. i wish eternal peace for anybody who went through such hardships.

Besides a couple parts it’s a well done movie. That country produces the best movies and tv shows. They are far superior in that area. No mistakes and realistic and excellent court scenes!

Actually made me cry, beautiful story. The idea of not having a happy ending is genius, if korean citizens saw the movie had a happy ending it wouldn’t invoke a need for change, they’d think that those happy endings happen in real life too. Thank god for this movie and how it changed Korean laws.

Director and actors of Squid Game. Someone spotted the talent. As in general, response to South Korean cinema came very late but it is a good thing anyway. Some top films from this country for more than 20 years…

Truly heartbreaking and blood boiling. It shows not only the silent suffering of the extremely vulnerable but how its deserved justice can meet the same fate when it comes up against many heinous hindrances such as corrupted authorities, high reputations, connections, bribery, and worst of all, preying on the desperation of the poor in exchange for legal immunity. Well worth the watch.
