Plot – Spoilers:
A family in Georgia have recently added a baby and Mom’s depressed. Jimmy, the oldest, saddled with the role of being mature despite being a kid himself has taken to it quite willingly and looks out for his younger siblings who are fairly useless in moments of crisis. Dad’s a truckin’ man, away more often than home. And part of Mom’s current mental state seems to draw from a feeling of neglect. So when Dad’s getting ready to head out to work, she unsuccessfully tries to make him stay by announcing their baby’s baptism will be preponed to when he’s out of town. But there are other reasons for her state of despair apart from congenital traits that might have found this the right time to kick in. There’s the feeling of her youth having slipped by unnoticed. And a (possibly) irrational comparison with a girl from school she’s convinced her husband fancied back then, who is now a weather girl. There’s also the scarecrow in the fields who keeps staring at her.
For what should have been just another b-movie with relatively unknown actors, Baby Blues does pretty well. Maybe because Colleen Porch has the eyes for the role.

Postpartum depression is an interesting subject for a movie. Unfortunately this movie misses the mark big time on the subject. Postpartum depression is a mood disorder that causes sadness and anxiety after childbirth. It doesn’t cause mothers to become hatchet wielding blood thirsty murderers. A movie that captures postpartum depression and depression in general very well is “Our Children” (2012) (it’s here on EUM – great film). To say “Baby Blues” is loosely based on the Andrea Yates case is just wrong. Yates’ husband Rusty was a religious freak and very strange. Andrea was beautiful before she had the kids. She had serious mental issues in her teens, including bulimia, and often talked about suicide. Someday I am hoping that a movie about Andrea Yates is made without veering off from the facts. It’s a fascinating story. Anywho, “Baby Blues” suffers because it’s a horror movie disguised as a movie about postpartum depression. In “Our Children” you get to know the mother when she was normal, happy and beautiful. In “Baby Blues” mom is a weird looking lunatic right from the beginning and there is barely any back story to explain how she got this way. Another thing that irked me about this movie is how the dip shit pot smoking neighbor with no teeth became the comic relief. What memories when I had it on CD and it didn’t have the censorship that I saw here but the movie is good, for me it didn’t need to be extremely hardcore.

The movie is cool to watch, but makes no sense after a while… When you’re the only one remaining, why don’t you simply get the fuck away as far as possible?
