In late 2005, the Palmer family were at a dam for a swim when 16-year-old Alice went missing. Her body was later recovered from the waters, but within a few months, Alice began appearing in her room and in video tapes and photographs taken by her brother and randoms. This documentary presents the views of family and friends, as a psychic also gets involved to help make sense of what’s happening.
Lake Mungo came at a time when the peak of found-footage had started to curve downwards, but still remains one of the more memorable ones from the ghostly-subgenre of the era. And the use of tape-handycam footage with its possibilities of grainy ghostly images is one of the charms here. There are little turns every now and then, as details get unraveled, to keep you interested and also one decent jumpscare that probably requires total darkness and the volume turned up, to work.

I wrote a review for this movie before it was put up here on EUM. When the administrator made the transfer from “The Retard Page” to “The List Page” it suddenly vanished along with several other reviews I wrote. It has a documentary like feel to it with pretty shit acting and a lame premise. The world famous “jump scare” everyone talks about is so lame I barely noticed it. 2 stars.

A rare modern “horror” that dears to unravel its plot with subtlety and pace, which I guess is why many here don’t get it. It transcends the horror genre with its quite harrowing reflections on loss and loneliness, definitely not made for the short attention span jump scare crowd. It really stays with you, unlike the instantly forgettable found footage films produced in the last twenty years. Five stars.
