In pre-war Japan, a recently-orphaned girl, Midori, is lured by a kindly stranger she meets on the streets while selling flowers. He runs a type of traveling theater featuring malformed performers among others. None of them give a shit about Midori’s age and instead abuse her vulnerability with cruelty. Her few moments of happiness in a day are shared with some puppies she hides away. When a sadistic trap finds them, he kills and cooks them. With the bottom of the pit she was tricked into, having fallen out, Midori is surprised when a dwarf magician-hypnotist who joins the troupe takes a romantic interest in her while also protecting her.
Based on a Suehiro Maruo manga, Midori was banned pretty much everywhere for years and the experience seemed to have put the director (also the animator) off so much, he moved from film to video games. A shame for movie fans because of the artistry on display here, even if some of the stills were replications from the manga.
I wish i could comfort Midori. It breaks my heart that upon perceiving the slightest glimmer of decency, she completely trusted that man. She probably felt that in order to finally receive some respect, she had no choice but to stay by this man’s side despite the monster he had proven to be. This movie is so depressing.

This entire comment is just a ramble.. I watched it a few years ago and didnt understand it that well but after experiencing & realising that mine and Midori’s life isnt so different, i found alot of comfort and familiarity in it. I wish it didnt show the rape aftermath of Midori especially since shes 12, you can convey the horror of rape without graphically showing it. I know this was made years ago but it always irks me and ruins the story when authors decide to show this, i can only imagine freaks getting off to it. I wonder why the animator/producer was so attached with the story and i hope it wasnt for perverse reasons. I read the manga and wish it was longer and the characters more developed. The fandom really loves mummy guy but throughout the entire story i was extremely creeped & intrigued out by the magician almost everyone seems to forget yet had the biggest impact on the characters. He is a good example of grooming and how past trauma makes someone unable to see red flags
I think it’s a censored version because when a friend showed it to me there was more detail and explicit sex scenes.

A lot of people misunderstand this movie imo. Most see it as a disgusting fetish movie, an excuse to make cp etc. But i think it shows thinks really well in its own way, its really extreme which REALLY gets the message across as seen by the outrage. If it was only implied i fear people wouldnt get it as well, i dont rlly like how the adult-minor relationship was said to work out so well i think they should have made it bad to realise you shouldnt do that. But again it shows midori is a fragile girl, clinging to any show of affection no matter by who due to her trauma. The dog scene wasnt that bad, as was the mom’s death rushed but after all this was made by 1 person anyway. Theres a lot of sudden cuts which makes it a bit hard to comprehend but the live action explains those anyway. The creepy art, the people inflating, the voice acting and whole idea is amazing for its time. Midoris screams seemed so real, the people dying truly seemed like a hallucination from him and the circus plot of her being used was a great show of child labor. It couldve been done better as to getting more info on the director but i still think this movie is great and very misunderstood.

Hey guys, i watched this movie and this isnt just purely shock value, but has a overall deeper meaning with metaphors and most of all, the bad scenes dont drag out too long, and are quick. if it didn’t have the scenes involved people would deny its a movie that represents rape and how it effects people. not to mention subtle tellings of mental illnesses forming in midori (Stolkholm, Depression ect)

I saw myself in midori, when I was a child the adults around me either made me suffer or facilitated my suffering. Just like her my childhood was stolen from me, just like her I’ve also been prone to seek the illusion of love by whatever older guy wanted to use me because of how desperate I was to feel loved and protected. What me and midori went through cannot be sugar-coated, it is grotesque and disturbing, it is a reality and the world should be aware of it.

People forget Kanabun was a child victim too. He got abused and sexually assaulted by the adults around him, just like Midori. Killing the puppies was cruel, but they were starving. He likely projected his trauma onto Midori because of the fucked up world he grew up in, where he probably faced similar abuse when he first arrived. He may have also tried to shock her as a way to assert some control as he had lost so much of his own. The story is about real life horrors children have faced, and the author didn’t shy away from that. Poor Midori, my heart breaks for her. She didn’t deserve that life, I just want to hug her so badly. Kanabun deserved better too. All the adults in their lives failed them.

Im 30 year old dude, and I saw layers and depth in this. Like the movie gives you idea that some old fart comes and gives hope to abused and rapped little girl, but when you think about it more, even that magician was only narcistic pedophile who wanted to take away little girl and was ready to murder for her. (And Im pretty sure he did it so she could see that, to show his power as he was little dwarf).
Absolute master piece and love that people cant see past of its shock value, its true colours.
