In pre-war Japan, a recently-orphaned girl, Midori, is lured by a kindly stranger she meets on the streets while selling flowers. He runs a type of traveling theater featuring malformed performers among others. None of them give a shit about Midori’s age and instead abuse her vulnerability with cruelty. Her few moments of happiness in a day are shared with some puppies she hides away. When a sadistic trap finds them, he kills and cooks them. With the bottom of the pit she was tricked into, having fallen out, Midori is surprised when a dwarf magician-hypnotist who joins the troupe takes a romantic interest in her while also protecting her.
Based on a Suehiro Maruo manga, Midori was banned pretty much everywhere for years and the experience seemed to have put the director (also the animator) off so much, he moved from film to video games. A shame for movie fans because of the artistry on display here, even if some of the stills were replications from the manga.

made me cry its such a sad movie. it may be disturbing but i view it more as a tragedy. its disgusting how midori was treated. shes only 12. this movie is so tragic. im glad it spreads awareness for things that can happen like this in real life. i dont reccomend to viewers who can get sensitive to these topics, but i love this movie because it can be relatable. i find it as a beautiful, disgusting tragedy. anyways 10/10 never thought i would love a movie about such terrible things.

this movie was so sad like i dont know how else to describe it it was just so sad like i dont think ive ever been sadder when watching a movie the ending was just like so sad and it was a different type of sadness usually when im sad theres at least the tiniest impression of its going to end its going to be okay or something but here she was going to be tortured for the rest of her life its so sad the ending was so like i dont know the word just showed that she was still a kid when she tried to hit them but coulkdnt it was so sad

I love this anime so much. one of my favs. idgaf what anyone says. anyone who says this deserved to be banned or whatever clearly didnt get the point of the movie.
as someone with c-ptsd and osdd from being abused all my life, this is the most realistic depiction of csa. Muchisute grooming Midori, Midori having no one and clinging onto Masamitsu (who only grooms her more) and not being able to truly escape this hellhole.
