There Is a Secret in My Soup (2001)

Option 1Can't Watch?

Audio sounds demonic? Video not playing/delay while scrolling? Use the "Can't Watch?" tab.

If the movie didn't load, you're being blocked by a security service in use here. Can happen for a number of reasons. Or your specific device/browser might be throwing up weird errors.

Click this first

A new tab will open and a basic security check like a captcha will be performed. After completing the check, close that page and return here.

Refresh this page. Wait 30 secs. The movie should load and you can just hit play.

If it still doesn't play, Click here to watch the movie

The movie should now start playing in a new tab of your browser or begin downloading to your device. This option has the minor disadvantage that English-language movies with optional subtitles in the movie player will not include these subs with this method.

The new system here has been designed keeping in mind even people with low internet speeds sub-8mbps. Even if you have a really bad connection, you should still be able to watch the movie without any issues if you:
Start the movie. Pause it. Wait for 30-45 seconds. Start playing again.

This 'Can't Watch' method really only works if it's your specific device/browser that's interfering with the player. There is no real advantage of speed here. Or if there is a temp network glitch or read lag from the server disk.

On iPhones, especially older ones, use Chrome instead of Safari. Might help.

IMPORTANT: Please make sure that the newly opened tab is not an ad popup asking you to download some software or whatever. Close any such popups and don't download any software - those are ads. Nothing is needed to be done by you other than to complete the security check which is often automated.

Plot – Spoilers:
Based on the notorious Hello Kitty Murder in Hong Kong, this is one of the two movies on the case to be featured here, the other being Human Pork Chop.

Maggie, who’s just had a kid needs the money and hooks up with a pimp known to her, but then steals from him. She’s then held captive in an attempt to recover the stolen money, but things escalate and the pimp and his accomplices begin torturing her, leading to her eventual death. Disposal of the body becomes a concern and the lot take to unique ways to get rid of it.

Personally, I preferred Human Pork Chop, mostly for Emily Kwan, who plays the victim more sympathetically. But this too has its effed up moments and if you’re interested in the case, watching both is a good idea. What’s quite fascinating though is the similarities in the screenplay of the two films. Both came out the same year and follow the same plotline – cops burst onto the crime scene, pick up the suspects for interrogation and the crime is visited in flashbacks. They both also depict Fan Man-yee (the irl woman) as stealing from her pimp, when she actually stole from a client. What’s shown more realistically here though is the role of the female accomplice in the torment and her age is closer to the irl 14-year-old who eventually panicked with hallucinations and ratted out the others. There’s also a sleazy aside here with one of the gang members and his girlfriend who get up to some odd stuff in his garage, including dousing her in some sort of engine oil and cotton waste and vacuuming her tits.

This rip was taken off a DVD and the makers seem to have pussied out in a few places. For one, they blur out the Hello Kitty plushie, possibly fearing being sued by the company. This release also appears to cut out explicit bits when Maggie’s forced to eat shit.

This is the same story as “Human Pork Chop” (2001) and they are both similar in structure. My review of “Human Pork Chop” is about the same as my review of this film. Low-budget production, not great acting and a sucky musical score. There are some parts of this one that are better than “Human Pork Chop” and visa versa. One scene that was totally useless in “There Is a Secret in My Soup” is from about 20:20 to 29:35 which seems like it was put in to pad out the film for time. A couple of elements to this film that I liked is that Fei was a cruel and annoying fuck who turned in to a pussy by the end. I couldn’t stand him and that’s some good acting if you ask me. Another bright spot in this film is when Fei’s girlfriend was having bizarre hallucinations. I disliked the annoying blurring of the Hello Kitty pillow and the cut scenes, some which apparently involved torture, scat and piss. It’s a decent movie but this story deserves to have a top notch production with a good director. Both films are pretty good. 2 and a half stars.
