Plot – Spoilers:
An old photographer runs a booth, where he also lives with his pet, a praying mantis. He doesn’t talk much and the few customers he has are satisfied with his shoop skills. He shares a silent friendship with one of them, an old man who grieves for his dead daughter. The photographer often keeps copies of the work he’s proud of, more as a memory of the few hours of friendship formed with the customer.
While in the woods one day, he chances upon a young woman, Kyoko, in a tree with a few cuts. She twists her body around, oblivious to the open-mouthed man staring at her and he ends up taking her into town to get her some help. Eventually, she ends up moving in with him, but he doesn’t take much notice of her, even shrinking from her touch.
Kyoko is an influencer and for a while their relationship is silent and more about having her photos taken and shopped to hide her scars. Kyoko is used to being liked and followed and so the more the photographer pays her no attention, the more she wants to hang around him. Also, despite being an influencer professionally, Kyoko’s passion is as a ballerina and the internet points she earns are like rapturous applause for a performance with the spotlight turned on her.
Meanwhile, another customer at the booth, a woman interested in touching up her photos to boost marital prospects, spells out Kyoko’s reality for her – You rate yourself through others’ eyes. This coincides with diminishing engagement on Kyoko’s account and in a desperate move, she stops having her scars shopped out. This surprisingly resonates with her audience, and now maintaining her scars to retain popularity becomes Kyoko’s new obsession.
This isn’t as explicit as some of the other dysmorphia movies on here, but it’s certainly among the more artistic, with rich sound.

I felt there was a lack of context for the self harm. What exactly was that woman struggling with in life that first caused her to do that to herself? But there was very little about her background.
A fantastic movie! I loved the scene of Kyoko dancing at the shopping mall to chaikovsky s walz and the last scene , the female mantis eating the male one and the photographer so true comment on the fact.the males that decide to procreate are mostly eaten alive by females . unless they have a child in another continent and have dissapeared…

if men want to act like slabs of meat, why shouldn’t we treat them that way. many people want to act like just because there are a few men who can produce art and beautiful things it makes them all have some kind of value, but art is the purest thing that can come from a human being, it is the best part of you. so my point is why would you judge someone by the best part of them instead of the worst. its a hitler invented highways argument. i dont see on good reason why mankind shouldnt be getting the tube stuck in the stomach and pumped full of dirt till they pop treatment. art will exist long after humans have faded away. exterminating male scum wont change that

Really good. I thought the photographer was a mute because he didn’t say boo until the end. I also thought he might be gay because he seemed really at home at the all male bath house but seemed uncomfortable around the girl making passes at him. The close up cinematography of the Praying Mantis was just great. It got kind of bizarre near the end which is always good too. 4 stars.
