Plot – Spoilers:
Harry loves his mom Sara. Especially when he’s pawning her tv set to fund his drug habits. He’s also in love with Marion, fellow junkie and the disconnected daughter of a wealthy businessman.
Marion’s allowance from her father is controlled by a therapist, whom she fucks when desperate for cash. Harry meanwhile has grand plans of being a successful seller with buddy Tyrone, whose connections seem promising.
Sara sits at home alone most of the time, addicted to a game show that glorifies winners and weight-loss. When she receives an invitation to be a part of the show, she gets obsessed with losing weight to fit into her favorite red dress.
And then life spirals for all four of them, with the spiral of Harry’s world running parallel to his mother’s more socially acceptable addiction.
Im someone coming from 2026 Really impressed but the making of this film .. the cuts the editing frames the interpretation and raw emotion .. will definitely re-watch it more than once lot to learn from this masterpiece.. full of real art .. whene movies were token seriously about the making .. Bravo .

I saw this when it first came out because Ellen Burstyn (Reagan’s mom in “The Exorcist” (1973)) is in it. I bought the DVD too. I didn’t know who Jared Leto was when I first saw it, which is probably a good thing because I have really come to dislike him. I love Jennifer Connelly though. Overall it is a good film and one of Burstyn’s best performances. 4 stars. Darren Aronofsky is a great film maker.
IMO Ellen Burstyn’s absolute best performance (other than “The Exorcist”) is in a TV movie called “Surviving: A Family in Crisis” (1985). Ellen is utterly magnificent as “Tina Brogan.” Super sad film. Top notch performances from the star studded cast.
WTH is this movie
Such an overrated movie.
I mean, yeah, addictions (to drugs, to tv, to pills, to food, any addiction at all) lead to bad consequences, big deal, what’s up with all those people glorifying this particular movie?
Music is ok but that’s it, the most part of the movie is predictable, whether you experienced hallucinations and drug’s cravings or not, just too predictable.
It’s really is one of those movies that everyone will talk about but most (if not all) wouldn’t watch twice -including me- , it’s one of those movies that are an one-time enjoyment, like American Beauty (1999) , Happiness (1998) , Altered States (1980) , Dagon (2001) , The Skeleton Key (2005) , etc.
BUT, if you like slow-burn movies that will make you feel depressed and sad (not scary like horror movies nor terrified like gore movies; just sad) , then this is a pretty good movie, actually one of the saddest movies i have ever watched (Lilya 4-ever, Mandragora, Basketball Diaries, are also very sad but there are many themes included in these -drugs, homelessness, rape, etc.- so it’s easier for them to be perceived as more depressed when compared to that one which only features drugs-addictions).
Also, this movie’s ending is probably the saddest one of ANY movie i ever saw, along with the ending of the movie Brazil (1985) and the movie Spider (2002).
Certainly not the ideal movie to watch on your birthday or while cuddling with your gf, lol.

Sara Goldfarb was the best character. Even though it’s easy to say on the surface that she lost her mind to amphetamine addiction & dysfunctional eating behaviors, i think she was the winner in this movie.
In the scene where Harry comes over to tell her about the new television it sounds like she feels like she’s already lost everything she lived for. The television opportunity was in reality probably just to be a member of the studio audience, but she envisioned it being her big moment to break into celebrity and tell the nation about her successful son.
Now that her mind is gone, she can live far from her dark apartment forever in the fantasy of her 15 minutes of fame.
Obsession and drugs – not a good mix.
