Veniamin’s mother can’t figure what’s wrong with him. He carries a pocket bible around and remains intently immersed in it. She’d much rather he had “uncontrollable erections” than preach with his new-found Christian zeal. But Veniamin doesn’t think much of her either. He flings lines from the Bible at her, that prove she’s been far from the model woman.
It’s not just his mother Veniamin has a problem with though – his schoolmates and teachers all seem diminutive, viewed from his Bible-elevated highground. His Science teacher is the only one concerned about all this at school and doesn’t believe this to be just a passing phase, but rather a symptom of his snowballing deterioration.
What begins as Veniamin’s objection to the gratuitous display of the bikini bodies of his female classmates, finds immediate support from a bullied gay boy and the ageing principal whose latent intolerance he awakens. Veniamin slowly discovers the control that can be wielded by invoking the guilt of the irreligious, by repeatedly pointing at their alleged immorality.
A religious zealot tries to force his fairy tale beliefs on everyone around him. Much like others that strongly believe in fairy tales like moon landing believers, democrats and Sandy Hookers, he has no problem resorting to lies, assassinations or even murder when his bullshit fantasies get exposed with their own contradictions. Like all fairy tale believers and democrats, he only picks and chooses what he wishes to believe and discards anything that doesn’t fit his ideology, even when it comes straight out of The Bible. Most of the time the “action” takes place inside a classroom and the classroom is just as boring as it was when I went to school. 3 stars.

Not a bad movie but definitely not effedup at all.. makes me wonder why is it here?!
It’s really about extremists and how one “rotten apple” can open the gates of hell to the ones surrounding… to the point where the sensible one becomes the victim. Again, not a bad plot, acting is very good but at the same time too many forced politicised references.
Good, not great, and definitely if you are looking for effedup movies with some brain (e.g. NOT August Underground, Serbian Movie, Marian Dora, etc, etc, etc) there are definitely better options here…

My heart went out to Grigory (Aleksandr Gorchilin), he emulated Venya and bore the brunt of his despotic biblical zealotry.
There were abundant riveting satirical political references and sanguine comedic dialogue.
In certain moments, the film displays a daring that’s bound to strike some viewers as extraordinarily nervy.
In scenes early and late in the story (which obviously reflects displeasure with the increasing prominence of state-sanctioned religion in Russia), characters make bold statements while standing beneath a portrait of Vladimir Putin, a gesture of stinging commentary that makes you wonder if the filmmaker is not pushing the envelope of what’s permitted in Russian cinema.
The Russian Composer of this film Ilya Demutsky, produced an incredible soundtrack. Ilya is renowned for controversial production pieces, that have caused outrage and imminent threats.

Not as a request, but as a suggestion (I have already seen the movies): you may also want to consider ‘Betrayal’ from the same director, or some (more) movies from Aleksei Balabanov and Andrey Zvyagintsev. For the truly effedup stuff, take ‘Hard to be a God’ by Aleksei German, which I have never been able to watch till the end (too strange, too subtle).
