The final part in the August Underground trilogy has often been described by director Fred Vogel as his favourite of the lot.
Regarding the film itself – not sure if it took three parts for Peter Mountain’s character to emerge, or if it is in Part 3 that we finally get to understand some basic things about him. As a killer he’s driven and fairly focused, but other than this, he’s kind of silly and a boring person. He tries to be funny and impress the camera especially when Crusty’s manning it, but simply isn’t. Killing is the only thing interesting about him and he probably knows this. All his accomplices through the three films are verbally smarter and often outshine him. And yet, he’s the one who’s been consistent and survives, because of his need to kill and make it through. His sexuality emerges more here. In August Underground Mordum, Crusty calls him a faggot and here in Penance, he often has a problem getting hard while directly interacting with a human. In fact, the only time he cums is when he masturbates to a dying trussed up woman.
Crusty is more attractive in Penance and conscious of Peter’s frustrations – mostly patient with him, she is even a little encouraging, goading him to get in shape. But when he can’t get it up often enough, she finds a man who can and who will fuck her dirty and anally. The stress of their relationship and the strain of the killing sprees eventually appears to catch up, as Crusty finally cracks.
Animals are more involved in this movie though no actual killings are shown except for a writhing rat being fed to an alligator. Other animal scenes include carving out the leg of a dead deer and a gratifying scene of a growling lion being fed by hand.
There is the usual August Underground platter of gore though not as much as in Mordum. Some interesting scenes include sawing off the arm of a dead woman who only has her torso left, and a pretty well effected scene of a fetus being carved out of a dead pregnant woman (Fred’s irl wife, Shelby Vogel)
Favourite Scenes:
1. The family murder:
Peter struggles to rape the mother and is frustrated by his inability to get it up while Crusty appears to be cleansing herself of some childhood Christmasy trauma. Excited by the presents and oblivious to his frustrations, she appears to cum strangling the daughter, and looks droopy and blissful by the end of it.
2. The interaction with the homeless guy is strangely entertaining despite the lack of gore or a murder. Maybe because it comes after some boring introductory scenes that you kind of want to just end to get the action going.
I suffered through all of the “August Underground” films. They all suck but this one I guess is the worst. Since I will only be putting one “August Underground” film in my “Old Mother Hubbard’s Top 25 Picks For WORST Movies On EUM” it will be this one instead of “Maggot Cut.” All of them are just fucking garbage. 1 star.

Simplesmente uma obra prima
Not as interesting as the first or Mordum by a long shot. It’s more based on the characters’ personal turmoil and that would be fine IF we had a reason to really care about any of them in the first place. They’re irredeemable, and the sudden show of emotion feels really out of place. When you make characters so nasty, it hits a certain extent, people don’t care about the “root cause” for their behavior anymore but just that they should get the chair. Also I feel like them descending into madness could’ve been a lot more unhinged than it was. These are the types of people I’d imagine singing to themselves, talking to nobody, smearing shit on the wall, regressing, etc. i feel like this one could’ve done better and I would expect characters like this going through a mental breakdown to be even more dangerous and vile than they were in the second one. But it was weirdly….tame?
Stupid movie. Stupid series. No substance at all and Freddy boy thinks it’s the hottest shit ever. Embrace the stupidness and gore dude, don’t try to make the world’s lamest character study. “I kill because I’m fat and ugly.” And for the girl, it’s “I kill for no reason in particular, but killing that pregnant woman was too much man!”. Go watch Henry or Jack if you want something worthwhile. The gore here is lacking too, you rarely see the killing. 75% of it happens off screen.

I actually liked this. It tells an interesting perspective on Peter and Crusty’s story. I ended up feeling bad for the both of them since they are both struggling with their own issues and mental health. This and the first movie are my overall favorites.

For me, this is absolutely the best of the trilogy. If you’re in it for pure yuck, the first would probably be for you. The quality of absolutely every aspect of this film, cinematography and story wise was pretty phenomenal. The death and gore in this one while not being as prevalent throughout the film is absolutely brutal and helps to expand on the story and the issues between these two characters. The deaths in this one go so far beyond the type of evil exhibited in the first films. The story and emotion driven scenes in this really took me by surprise. The whole last 20 or so minutes floored me.
Gawd Crusty is so hot. I love August Underground movies so much. I recently got into these types of movies. I’ve watced “A Serbian film”, “120 days of sodom”, “Martyrs” and most of the Guinea Pig movies. I had high hopes bc all the reviews on google and reddit etc said that these r disturbing n stuff but honestly they were all really boring. Oh but all the August Underground movies on the other hand, piece of art. Shame that most people can’t appreciate this stuff.

I think I would say this one is the superior one in AU trilogy. Way more focused on Peter and Crusty just bonding as a couple then it is focusing on gore and violence. Also I cannot help but find Christie Whiles incredibly cute in this one.

despite its everything, i think this is the most narratively interesting august underground movie. whoever wrote the og caption is totally right, this is a really weird but effective character study of peter. he’s super aware of this being the most interesting part of him. his inability to perform with the mom of the family and like, obviously hateful treatment of women in this film reads very heavily to me as your typical ‘maniac with mommy issues’ antihero for movies like this. For some reason, ketchup really grosses me out. I just think it’s disgusting. It’s pretty weird that the only scene I had to close my eyes at, in the whole trilogy was when she said, she was going to put her face in it the ketchup.
Worst of the series but overall not bad. Compared to the first two less about the murders and more about the character’s issues.
