Plot – Spoilers:
Two schoolgirls, Pauline and Juliet, from differing backgrounds, become close friends when Juliet moves from England to New Zealand. Juliet is well-off and her parents well-educated, while Pauline has a basic lifestyle with the family’s earnings mostly coming from renting their rooms. Both girls were sick and isolated in bed as kids and also share a general rejection of their immediate current lives.
As their friendship gets more obsessive, they open out a little world of their own, into which they begin escaping – initially through the fiction they collab-write and later during moments of stress and detachment. A couple years later though, circumstances force Juliet’s parents to need to move out of the country and the girls who can’t bear to be apart decide to make plans of their own.
The magic realism in this can get annoying at times, as also some of the theatrical dramatic acting by Kate Winslet. This was her debut performance and is an example that not all debut performances portend the emergence of a great actor (unlike This Boy’s Life,for example).
This is based on the Parker–Hulme case from the 1950s. Juliet’s father later went on to be a part of England’s Hydrogen Bomb project, while she became a fairly successful pseudonymous author (Anne Perry) of detective fiction until she was outed when this movie came out. Pauline migrated to the UK and led a private, quiet life until her death yesterday.
Bisogna essere dotati di un certo genio creativo per riuscire a trasformare una reale tragedia in un film godibile, visionario ed artistico, accompagnato da una piacevolissima colonna sonora. Da molti ritenuto il capolavoro di Jackson. Questa pubblicata é la versione integrale, ne ho viste altre compreso quella italiana dove ci sono tante piccole parti omesse. Gli sguardi gelidi e carichi di odio di Pauline/Lynskey indirizzati alla madre mettono i brividi. 5 stelle.
A questo punto spero di veder pubblicato, in questo variegato ed interessante sito, il film Interrupted Girls
