Part of the Grodecki trilogy on underage male prostitution in Prague, this documentary is possibly the most depressing of the lot for a number of reasons.
This time the focus is more on prostitutes who also do porn. There are two perspectives here – that of the boys which is mostly one of feeling victimized while the other perspective comes from a well-known (in the scene) director of these pornos, Pavel Rousek.
For some of the boys, it begins as “We’re anyway having sex with other boys, so how does a camera matter.” Some even admit to enjoying onscreen sexual activity with much younger boys, all the while looking steely-faced. Because they’re all completely fucked up and they all know it, including Pavel. With Pavel, there’s disgust with his profession and his actors, and yet also a certain pride in being able to extract something that he believes is useful from the filth he sees himself as being immersed in. There’s also bitterness over what he finally gets to keep – whether it’s his art edited into something else by the production company or the money he gets to take off a money chain where he and his boys are the smallest fish. Just that one’s a little bigger than the rest and the public face of the exploitation.
Body Without Soul then takes on a bizarre deviation when it turns out Pavel is some kind of pathology assistant and we follow him cutting up a body, as he tries to present a front where he’s got a life outside of porn.
As for the boys, there’s the spoken wisdom of a long life, long before they’ve even lived it or might not even get to live.

Compelling documentary about rent boys in Prague who get involved in the porn film industry. The porn director is a scary and intriguing character, bullying and exploiting the boys as he makes films which he says represent his “absolute self” and “philosophical vision” whilst performing autopsies at the local morgue as a day job. One of the more honest films about the impact of neoCapitalism on the former Soviet bloc; the use of Mozart and Albinoni on the soundtrack add a further visionary, spiritual dimension to a film which is ultimately about a certain contemporary soullessness. Wiktor Grodecki’s hypnotic and frightening documentary on the human science of male sex workers. Of the most intimate and revealing documentaries on male prostitution. Not to be missed. Although this was a documentary, I found it very well done to the point that I felt like I was watching a movie, with a plot, dialogue, etc. I think it was because the interviews with the different boys moved from one subject to another but not jumping around. It was interesting to see the variety of opinions on the same subject, presented almost side by side. I did find an overwhelming sadness amongst all the characters, though, like they wanted a better life but somehow had given up on even dreaming about it. This film is a lot like it’s predecessor “Not Angels But Angels” (1994) except that the focus is on teenage boys participating in hardcore gay sex films instead of prostitution. The boys discuss, in a greek chorus fashion, about how they never use condoms as protection from STDs and AIDS because hardcore gay sex film fans won’t buy the movies unless the twinks are raw dogging it. Wiktor Grodecki gets the filmmaker to open up the same way he got the pimp to open up in the previous film about his activities, whether what he is doing is against the law or not. The filmmaker’s headquarters are right across the street from the police station. The interviews with the filmmaker are intertwined from 2 different interviews and at first I thought it was 2 filmmakers who looked similar because his voice sounds different in the 2 interviews. “Body Without Soul” is a little more interesting than “Not Angels But Angels” because the filmmaker is a mortician by day and it shows him at work doing an autopsy in the morgue which is a little gruesome. At around 43:00 the filmmaker discusses an encounter he had with a large bald man he met at an S & M club who wanted to “make love” to him and the filmmaker left because he didn’t want to know what that meant.
