Not Angels But Angels (1994)

Option 1Can't Watch?

Wait 30secs. Movie still not playing? Click the "Can't Watch?" tab.

If the movie didn't load, it means you are being blocked by a security service we use. This can happen for a number of reasons.

Click this first

A new tab will open and a basic security check like a captcha will be performed. After completing the check, close that page and return here.

Refresh this page. Wait 30 secs. The movie should load and you can just hit play.

If it still doesn't play, Click here to watch the movie

The movie should now start playing in a new tab of your browser or begin downloading to your device. This option has the minor disadvantage that English-language movies with optional subtitles in the movie player will not include these subs with this method.

The new system here has been designed keeping in mind even people with low internet speeds sub-8mbps. Even if you have a really bad connection, you should still be able to watch the movie without any issues if you:
Start the movie. Pause it. Wait for 30-45 seconds. Start playing again.

This 'Can't Watch' method really only works if it's your specific device/browser that's interfering with the player. There is no real advantage of speed here. Or if there is a temp network glitch or read lag from the server disk.

If you're still having problems, try using 'Incognito mode' in your browser. On iPhones, especially older ones, use Chrome instead of Safari. Might help.

IMPORTANT: Please make sure that the newly opened tab is not an ad popup asking you to download some software or whatever. Close any such popups and don't download any software - those are ads. Nothing is needed to be done by you other than to complete the security check which is often automated.

About – Spoilers:
This was the first in what turned out to be a trilogy on young-male prostitution in Prague. A few stills from Mandragora are featured here, but considering that came out in 1997, they were probably edited in for the DVD release.

Not Angels… features interviews with male prostitutes (aged 14-20) and a pimp at the Prague railway station who presents himself as some sort of liaison officer.

For some, this docu might be a reiteration of their argument against sympathy for prostitution as easy money, relative to waking up everyday for school or a job you hate. But for others, the age and vacuous personalities of the people featured in this will work differently.

The male prostitutes are of two types here:
Those who’ve accepted their lives and are at a kind of resigned peace with it, even though they lower their voice while saying “prostitute”.
Then there are those who are at war with their lives. It opens with one such guy who’s prominently featured through the film. His dad moved from NYC to Prague when he was 10, and now he’s on the streets, tagging walls and collecting little mannerisms that he believes makes him look cool and tough while presenting himself as an artist – a little lean forward when he’s saying something he thinks is critically important, but once the disarming questions begin, his vulnerability is tragically exposed.

The boys talk of how they got into it, their experiences, AIDS and their anxieties about the future. There’s also an overarching shame over their homosexual trysts and a desperation to have a girlfriend or fuck girls. If you liked Mandragora, you should probably watch this docu that is unique in its ability to hold your attention despite it being just a bunch of people talking through it.

About the Subs:
I’ve retained the non-native nature of the spoken English in its subs. Some inaccuracies may exist as the voices aren’t always clear.

This is the first in a trilogy of films by Wiktor Grodecki about teenage male prostitutes in Prague. This one is a documentary as is the second film “Body Without Soul” (1996). The third film is a proper drama film entitled “Mandragora” (1997) which has been here on EUM for a while. It seems like the 2 documentaries were done as research to make the film “Mandragora.” “Not Angels But Angels” focuses on male teenage prostitutes and their hardcore gay sexual encounters with elderly male clients. It has a Greek chorus type of interview style with the discussions about the client’s sexual desires becoming quite bizarre at times. The pimp who is interviewed by the filmmaker has no problem discussing what he does and he does not seem concerned if law enforcement knows what he does. 2 and a half stars.

In all 3 films the discussions about male teenage prostitution and young boys having hard core gay sex is told in such a matter-of-fact way that it seems like it is a right of passage for teenage boys to become involved in these activities in Prague. “Body Without Soul” focuses on teenage boys participating in hardcore gay sex films and it is a little more interesting than “Not Angels But Angels” because the gay sex filmmaker is a mortician by day and it shows him at work doing an autopsy in the morgue which is a tad gruesome.
