Plot – Spoilers:
Based on acclaimed writer, J. M. Coetzee’s book, and brought to life by a great cast led by the often-brilliant, John Malkovich.
David Lurie, a white South African professor, teaches Romantic Literature at university and is a Byron obsessive. He refuses to be apologetic about his lustful pursuits and dismisses any such notions as being too old to change. Just like he dismisses the degradation of his power as a white man in post-apartheid South Africa. His lesbian daughter lives on a farm, far from the sophisticated world David immerses himself in.
A mixed-race student, Melanie, catches David’s eye and he insists on pursuing her despite her making it clear she’s with him only because she feels pressured to. He even fucks her when she’s passed out and continues to trail her even when she stops attending his class and misses the midterms. Eventually, the physical and ageist intimidation by Melanie’s cousin/boyfriend and an outright sacking from his job sends David to the quietude of his daughter Lucy’s farm. But there are a few disconcerting things there and David finds it hard to reconcile with the unsophisticated life and friends of Lucy. He is also put off by a black man, Petrus, who though he lives in their old stable, walks around with a freedom and familiarity David just can’t accept. He soon discovers Petrus has bought a small portion of land from Lucy; but the disconcerting thing for David is watching Petrus’ determination, hardwork and toil in the sun that suggest he will not always remain a minor-figure neighbour.
In Disgrace, difficult post-apartheid South African race-relations camouflage the basic stubbornness of:
An ageing man who won’t accept his failings and snobbishness until he is tragically left no choice.
A stubborn woman who will concede and do anything to continue to live and die on her farm, helped along in this choice by the guilt of being white and belonging to a gender she believes is doomed.
I found this film to be riveting to watch for some reason. Usually I would need to take a short break in the middle of a 2 hour film but this one kept my attention. The film seems to suggest that because there are rich arrogant White people like David Lurie black people should be able to rape, rob and murder without consequence. Lurie was caught for his crime, was threatened and harassed, had his car vandalized, admitted his guilt and lost his job as a result. Later he apologized and asked for forgiveness. It never even crossed the minds of the black criminals that raped Lurie’s daughter and tried to murder Lurie by setting him on fire to apologize or to even feel they did anything wrong. Petrus is a real arrogant cunt as well to throw a party and invite one of the criminals AND the victims to attend, then later tell Lurie he is going to marry his daughter after she has discovered she is pregnant by one of the rapists. An odd occurrence is when Lurie’s daughter rushes over to tell David one of the rapists is at the party, considering the stance she takes later in the film of not wanting David to confront the criminals. spoilers….You knew the neighbor had something to do with it right off the bat. The one day he’s gone, Malkovich’s daughter is raped. Then one of the rapists is seen at the neighbor’s party and he lies about not knowing him. Malkovich calls him out on the lie and they play it off like some kind of nog wisdom when he says “Yeah i lied, but your daughter isn’t being raped right now so we’re hunky dory.” Then she marries him and keeps the baby. Why stop there. Go all in. Should’ve had Malkovich’s character end up pregnant and married to the retarded kid with the absurd amount of kumbaya mentality from Malkovich and his daughter.
