Plot – Spoilers:
Italian ’80s movie about a trip to the Amazon.
A professor who went deep into the Amazon jungles has gone missing and an investigative reporter thinks it could be an even bigger story than her current one about the practice of shrinking human heads, prevalent among some tribes. So she rounds up some guys for the journey including a biologist, and the first thing they do is impressively steal a yellow airplane so everyone on the highways can notice it.
The trip is not just about finding a missing man, as there’s a whiff of a possible treasure trail too. Along the way, the group encounters a variety of animals in their habitats in entertaining fashion, but also have to battle Spanish prospectors who don’t hesitate to brutalize tribesmen that don’t cooperate in their gold quest.
I usually really like these types of films but this one doesn’t work for me as well as say “Cannibal Ferox” (1981). As far as the wooden acting and the production go, both films are about the same but in this one the Americans are too heroic which makes it come off as kind of corny. 2 and a half stars.

I honestly prefer this flavor of mondo, like Man From Deep River, where there’s still some reality grounding the sensationalism.
This movie plays out more like a documentary than a ‘fucked up movie’. Filmed about 9 years before I made it to the Amazon. Everything seemed pretty realistic except the bat scene, which was just plain silly if you know anything about vampire bats. Otherwise this gem was filmed at the very end of the era of isolated tribes. Sure brought back a lot of fine memories, and sad ones too. If you like cultural anthropology, don’t miss this!
