Classic flick, it has it problems but still a classic. Ichi is an annoying whiny rapist fetishist bitch, the old man is deplorable for what he initially did to ichi; making him a sick twisted perverted killing machine, and I rejoiced when he hung himself; but I digress. Kakihara is the star of the film, his great outfits with his sadomasochistic personality was delectable and it left me wanting more, if only we focused on the yakuza more, the cgi is laughably bad especially with the two stand out scenes; the pimp being split in half and the dumbass old man having his head ridiculously edited onto a bodybuilder. Other than that this movie is sick and ready for any demented fuck to enjoy. Japanese cinema is like no other.
Probably Miike’s most adventurous rollercoaster ride (aside from maybe Gozu) based on the manga of the same name. If you like this movie I suggest to check out the manga which goes deeper into the themes of this story. Especially the character of Kakihara differs heavily from the manga, which is a shame imo but you will probably be glad to hear that what has been scrapped is made up for in glorious ultra-violence.
