No one cared thus far. Do you?

AKA:
Directed by: Andrey Iskanov
Starring: Alexander Shevchenko (Man in glasses), Andrey Iskanov (Priest), Alexandra Batrumova (Girlfriend), Svyatoslav Iliyasov (Beret man)
Country: Russia
Language: Russian (English subtitles)
Runtime: 02:06:01
Genres: Bizarre-Surreal, Gore-Gruesome-Splatter, Small Creatures, Violence against Women, Vampires, Drugs, Necrophilia

Plot – Spoilers:
Couple of guys are having some trouble with recurring nightmares that share a similar setting. One of them is on the verge of paranoia holed up in his apartment, while his girlfriend zones out in a fetish club. The other guy seems to be a priest having ideological differences with his faith. The priest also has fantasies/memories of the same club and other guy’s girlfriend.

Constructing a plot beyond this (if this was even correct) is left to the viewer’s imagination. Visions of Suffering like a lot of films in the genre is best experienced, rather than understood. From an effedup viewpoint, in addition to violence on the dance floor, there’s also a necro scene – though not sure if a vampire fucking a dead woman counts as necro.

Yay, many thanks for adding one of my requests admins:D A great fit for this site, imo, kinda surprised it wasn’t here already tbh. Iskanov’s other film, Nails, would be great too for down the road… Btw admins, thanks especially for having the foresight to have the Effedup watermark white this time instead of the usual yellow, which would’ve been an eyesore in a film like this w such drab colors;)

I’ll start right out by saying if u like experimental films, then view this bc chances r you’ll enjoy it! For others tho, it might b hit or miss.

Regarding the plot, from what I gather, our protagonist has nightmares when it rains, and upon further discussion with his friendly neighborhood phone repairman, learns vampires can use these visions of suffering (ha) as a kind of doorway to u, but only if u know about them. So by that token, the repairman just kinda fucked him over by telling him that, hence, now he is beginning to see the vampires. The overall message is less clear cut tho, at least to me. Perhaps to not go all Freud status trying to overthink and psychoanalyze ur own dreams, lest it lead to worse?

Some good cgi effects generally, some looked very poor tho esp the screen overlays, sacred geometry trip-scenes, and title/credits (specifically reminded me of talentless screamerclauz cgi lol). It wasn’t horrible tho, esp considering this was an independent film, from ’06 at that. Same w the gore sfx, somewhat amature, but didn’t really detract from the story or feel of the film. I also appreciated the scenes with the bullet (?? the flying thing, a la Phantasm sentinel) and the tubes entering the protagonists mouth at the end, which I felt like was kinda a tip of the hat to cyberpunk films like Tetsuo.

Decent cinematography, music was pretty cool imo, a nice mishmash of industrial/techno/EDM hybrids and some very giallo-esq songs too. Acting was good. Some neat country and city shots/scenery too, in regards to the color tones and filters used. I also liked the choppy scenes, which only added to the surreal qualities of the film. Gave it a disjointed, dreamy, trippy feel.

Some downsides, imo, including the aforementioned hit and miss effects, would be the film dragged a tiny bit in the middle for roughly 15min I felt like (fyi there’s a directors update from a few years ago that is trimmed down to 90min w reshot scenes apparently, but I generally will always prefer the longest cut for almost all films), the cgi rain effects got somewhat tiresome, and it was very noticable many scenes had post dubbed sounds. My biggest gripe tho was I WANTED MORE NIGHTMARE SCENES! Those I thought were great, creepy, loved the drum banging monster, the sepia color made it have a timeless surreal quality, and hanging gibbet cages always kick ass!!

Random things I really liked included him reading the killer book w a Mary Kelly picture(was Rippers last victim), the drug dealers current menu, the old woman neighbor who was creepy weird, esp the finger scene, and the friendly neighborhood phone repairman saying ‘my salary is an allegory’ LMFAO!

I really enjoyed this film for what it was. I feel like the directors goal was surrealist cinema and not horror per se. I’ll give it a 7/10, good stuff for fans of experimental film, and one that’s harder to come by too. Thanks again admins;)

Elliot, if you liked this one try checking out the directors cut made 10 yrs later in 2016. Imo its a lot better in a lot of ways although I dont know about its availability but worth hunting around for. Cheers.

Thanks Zed Man, ya I’ve been wanting to check it out but I missed the run of em when Unearthed was selling em, been waiting to score a cheap copy online. They’re actually releasing The Untold Story on Blu Ray soon, which was always a favorite of mine as a kid, im definitely not missing the opportunity to snag that one!
