Plot – Spoilers:
Set in a fictional small town Endora somewhere nowhere, Gilbert works at a mom-and-pop grocery that’s struggling to compete with a branded supermarket just outside of town. Gilbert’s loyalty and comfort working there is symptomatic of his life. He doesn’t aspire or even believe he can get out of Endora.
Gilbert’s personal life doesn’t extend beyond taking care of his retarded brother Arnie and obese mother whom he calls a “beached whale”. He has a couple of sisters – one of whom he barely tolerates, a couple of friends, an older married woman who summons him whenever she wants to secretly hurt her husband.
And that’s his life. Apart from the repressed memory of a depressed father who hung himself in the basement.
Into this mundane world arrive Becky and her grandma as part of an annual tourist trailer gathering and Gilbert briefly sees a life beyond Endora.
What’s Eating Gilbert Grape works as a great portrait of the struggling suburban American family under the masterful watch of Lasse Hallström and through awe-worthy acting performances.
I watched this at the insistence of a couple of people who said it’s fantastic. You’re not going to like my review.
It’s an incredibly sappy slice of small town Americana told through the eyes of mainstream Hollywood folks who wouldn’t know anything about it. For a mainstream Hollywood film, the EUM faithful just seem to be gushing all over it while simultaneously dismissing movies like “Sleepers” (1996) because they are too “mainstream.” “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape” is about as mainstream as you could possibly get with 3 over rated Hollywood actors, Johnny Depp, Leonardo DiCaprio and monotone Juliette Lewis, and a slew of other well known Hollywood actors. Of course it has the sentimental music at all the right moments to tug at your heart strings. DiCaprio again puts in an over the top performance and over acts to the hilt. I literally burst out laughing when the fat mama was huffing and puffing while she was climbing the stairs.
Sorry folks but this one is just too mainstream for me. I’m going to go straight up the middle with this one and give it just a cunt hair under 2 and a half stars. It’s just to corny and sappy.

I can’t stand Leonardo DiCraprio. He is the most arrogant, smug, no talent actor who got into the business by nepotism. Every movie I have seen with him in it sucks because of him. Johnny Deep is another way over-rated actor that makes lousy flicks. Someone told me “Dead Man” (1995) was awesome so I watched it. It was terrible. I liked “Secret Window” (2010), “Donnie Brasco” (1997), a bit part in “Platoon” (1986) and a few other things he’s done, but overall I don’t like the type of movies he picks to be in. Two smug, arrogant, over-rated actors in the same film I feel would be more than I can take so I haven’t watched it. I’m going to say that it sucks without even watching it like a lot of other people do on here. Convince me why I should watch it if you think it is great.
