Uzumaki (2000)

Option 1Can't Watch?

Wait 30secs. Movie still not playing? Click the "Can't Watch?" tab.

If the movie didn't load, it means you are being blocked by a security service we use. This can happen for a number of reasons.

Click this first

A new tab will open and a basic security check like a captcha will be performed. After completing the check, close that page and return here.

Refresh this page. Wait 30 secs. The movie should load and you can just hit play.

If it still doesn't play, Click here to watch the movie

The movie should now start playing in a new tab of your browser or begin downloading to your device. This option has the minor disadvantage that English-language movies with optional subtitles in the movie player will not include these subs with this method.

The new system here has been designed keeping in mind even people with low internet speeds sub-8mbps. Even if you have a really bad connection, you should still be able to watch the movie without any issues if you:
Start the movie. Pause it. Wait for 30-45 seconds. Start playing again.

This 'Can't Watch' method really only works if it's your specific device/browser that's interfering with the player. There is no real advantage of speed here. Or if there is a temp network glitch or read lag from the server disk.

If you're still having problems, try using 'Incognito mode' in your browser. On iPhones, especially older ones, use Chrome instead of Safari. Might help.

IMPORTANT: Please make sure that the newly opened tab is not an ad popup asking you to download some software or whatever. Close any such popups and don't download any software - those are ads. Nothing is needed to be done by you other than to complete the security check which is often automated.

AKA: Spiral
Directed by: Higuchinsky
Starring: Eriko Hatsune (Kirie), Fhi Fan (Shuichi)
Country: Japan
Language: Japanese (English Subs)
Runtime: 01:30:50
Genres: Horror

Plot – Spoilers:
Kirie lives a simple life with her father in a small Japanese town. She’s amused and happy with the little things her life has to offer. Shuichi is her childhood friend, and while he’s inexpressive and academic, Kirie hopes to eventually get married to him as the two go way back to tough times in her childhood.

Shuichi is presently disturbed by his father’s obsession with spiral objects and creatures, and feels their entire town will soon be consumed by this horror. Things kind of go down that path.

I love this movie, it strays pretty heavily from the source material but that is partially because the 3rd volume hadn’t been out when the film was made. I especially love, what I call, the “hair battle” scene because one of the shots looks exactly like a panel in the graphic novel. Highly recommend reading the graphic novel if you haven’t btw, so much detail in the illustrations it’s fantastic, sad, but fantastic.

It’s kinda slow and super weird. It’s gets weirder the longer it goes if you can stick with it. I don’t know too much about manga or Japanese comic books and graphic novels but I liked this film. I really liked the song that played over the closing credits too. 3 and a half stars.

I see a lot of negative reviews for this here but in my personal opinion from someone who read the manga and watched the adults swim series this was a solid Junji Ito adaptation! For the time it was made, the visual portrayals of the spiral horrors that haunt Kurouzu Town were great. I liked the pacing while at sometimes slow, the story of Uzumaki is episodic, the way they structured each story was satisfying. The ending itself leaves a lot to be desired from a narrative standpoint as it just kind of ends but the new additions such as the detective and original ideas were creative and refreshing to see instead of watching a re-ordered play by play of the manga. Overall my thoughts are for the time period it is quite a solid adaptation, that used good visual and practical effects. Shout out to the actor who played Yamaguchi (Jack In The Box) as well. He leaped off the manga! in my opinion. The actors all did a solid job at depicting this twisted story and I appreciated the emphasis on Shuichi and Kirie’s relationship as while sweet in the manga is slightly under developed. I liked the creative choices made with that. I hope if there was to be a current adaptation they incorporate the original story but also be unique and creative, instead of following the manga one to one using it’s most iconic elements and enhancing them to make into a cohesive narrative could make… Read more »

Japanese are the best when it comes to horror movies. The indirect thoughts and silly music make the scene even more terrifying. They don’t have a specific entity that represents horror, that’s what makes it special.

I feel like at least some of these would be considered helices, rather than vortices.

I love the manga, but this movie is a crappy piece of dogshit. I hope the Adult Swim adaptation is better. This movie just doesn’t capture the tone of the original.

It looks OK for an adaptation of a story that is too weird to begin with, I liked it more because it was part of the rise of asian horror in the early 2000s and somehow I have nostalgia for that. The guy that plays Shuichi sucks as an actor but the make up for the character was great, didn’t expected anyone to look like those creepy thin dudes that Ito draws. Some of the other characters were kind of silly for the story but Ito also makes wacky stuff like Soichi’s Diary of Curses so I let it pass.

Ugh, Spiral… why!!? If u dont have the Evil Dead films, the Saws, etc because (call it a logical guess, I could b wrong tho since u got the Hostel trilogy, lol) they’re mainstream horror, even tho u could define em as effedup, then why this:/ It’s literally almost as mainstream as ringu or ju-on, which I bet aren’t on here either for that very reason. Just off the top of my head quickly, what about (screams) Evil Dead TRAP, or Cure, hell even Pulse or Tag if u wanted something mainstream but still very effedup, etc. Or u could go the nasty and fringe af route w Squirmfest, lmfao. Literally sssooo many other Japanese films that would be more fitting for this site instead of this mainstream tween garbage. No offense meant, I say this with love, bc I don’t want to see this sites film selection become a goddamn joke w films like fucking Cabin In The Woods? Just some user input, call it. I digress, thanks either way for the new title. Spiral as a standalone film is average at best. It’s not that the makers were trying to be edgy or deep and leave it open to interpretation, it’s that it only covers a fraction of the manga story and is condensed, so that’s why it doesn’t make much sense, unless you’ve read em. Just a shitty amateur feel in regards to the shots and acting. Laughably awful cgi sfx, and end of shot screen wipes… Read more »
