Anna Hall’s follow-up to 2004’s Edge Of The City was basically two episodes on the British TV show, Dispatches – Britain’s Sex Gangs (2011) and The Hunt for Britain’s Sex Gangs (2013) – that covered British Pakistani grooming gangs operating in Telford and the North Midlands.
Several years after Edge Of The City, the police are still floundering, dealing with British laws, being politically correct and bemoaning the lack of conclusive evidence. It’s a cat and mouse:
On the one side, criminals playing with laws and the fear in their victims – the system gives the underaged girls the choice not to take the tests that’d prove they’d been raped and they often don’t do it, either because they’re scared or simply because they don’t see themselves as victims. Either way, they end up not cooperating, making it simpler for the cops to simply drop the case.
And on the other, you’ve got parents doing a lot of the work the police should be doing, alongside the non-governmental groups desperately figuring out ways to circumvent the laws to gain convictions.
Tazeen Ahmad who died in 2019 reports on the cases. One of the episodes follows a proactive police unit in Telford over the course of a year during Operation Chalice and includes some of the arrests, especially of one notorious fellow. Any charges made against his hair and beard aren’t presented here though 🙂
There are interviews with some of the girls and their parents and even the father of two convicted brothers, while also presenting the views of the British Pakistani community. Ironically, there’s even an interview with politician, Baron Ahmed. Ironic because, several years after this, he was himself disgraced over sexual abuse allegations.
I combined the two episodes and reversed the chronological order because:
It flows better.
The 2013 ep. kind of suggested some closure through convictions, which in hindsight hasn’t turned out to be true.
The 2011 ep. interviews with victims and others is more impactful because the victim appears without her face hidden.

I like documentaries. This is the type of documentary we Americans would see on PBS on the TV series “Frontline.” “Britain’s Sex Gangs” is the familiar story that was dramatized quite effectively in the TV miniseries “Three Girls” (2017), which is available to watch right here on EUM and is a film that received 5 stars from yours truly. It’s the story of shit skin Paki Muslim mud duck groomers who target vulnerable junior high school aged girls and use and abuse them. The Administrator put the 2 documentaries together but out of sequence which I feel was a wise choice. Near the end of the documentaries (which is really the end of the 1st one) my anger grew because of the Muslim mud duck who tries to justify why Paki shit skins rape girls between the ages of 11 and 15 (01:24:20). Also infuriating is the interview with Peter Davies, the chief executive of the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Center, who passes the blame over to the community for not being involved enough while he shines a seat with his ass and makes a huge government pay check. As far as dry documentaries go this is a good one. 4 stars. That being said, I have to address an issue that is bothering me.
