About:
Based on early twentieth-century serial killer, Albert Fish, who murdered and ate children.
A sneering performance by Patrick Bauchau leads a film that avoids the grisly, yet doesn’t let up on the horror of the crimes. There are minor references to Fish’s childhood, but as his son says in the film:
You can’t always look at what happens to people.
Sometimes you have to look at them,
How they act,
What they do.
Very disappointing. This film makes it look like he had only one victim. How could that make him a serial killer. There were at least three other victims including two 18-year-old boys that he, at age 60something, overpowered together, and a prepubescent boy whose penis he ate and described as delicious but of the testicles said, “His little peanuts I was unable to chew.”
No sex included and no gore boring movie
Fucking pedo. Go hang your self from a bridge you pos. Also good idea after you die, a necrophiliac to enjoy your rotten dead anus.
disappointing – no gay men
Here baby!
I’m your huckleberry.
Lol 😁
I am slightly disappointed with this film but disappointed nonetheless. It’s the sanitized Hollywood rendition of the Albert Fish story, much like “Killer: A Journal of Murder” (1995) was the sanitized Hollywood rendition of the Carl Panzram story and “Lords of Chaos” (2018) was the sanitized Hollywood rendition of the Mayhem story. I think that is what they mean by “classy and disturbing piece of true crime.” All 3 films tend to gloss over the facts for a more marketable story to cater to some demographic or another. They do get most of the facts right unlike the film “Frances” (1982) about Frances Farmer portrayed by Jessica Lange which is just a complete fabrication, admitted by the screenplay writer and the director. In all 4 of those cases the real stories are much more fascinating than the Hollywood versions with the added dramatizations.
That being said, “The Gray Man” is still a very good film and is worth watching, especially for Patrick Bauchau’s performance as Fish. All the actors were good, great cinemaphotography and good detail in the time period setting. They had everything they needed. Slightly disappointed but disappointed nonetheless. 3 and a half stars.
Good point & your description of being “sanitized” & “Glossed over” is spot on, Those are the words i was looking for & i felt the the same way about “A journal of murder” it was a good film overall but as you pointed out “Sanitized” which gave it the feeling of a Midday movie or a PG 13 version, i think they skipped over a few things in Panzarams story that could’ve added to the film, His travels & incedents of the railway riding hobos (i dont mean full detail just more of a reference to it, as it was a big part of his “Psychology”) & maybe a bit more about his alleged travels abroad & his activities in Africa to give it a bit more scope, But overall it was ok, Just too Polised & trimmed, Much as the case here with ‘The gray man’ I’ll only disagree on ‘Lords of Chaos’ yeah being Metal fan of all genres, it wasnt totally accurate & watered down, But i just had a good time watching that flick & dont take it to seriously as a Bio pic.
Totally inaccurate* my bad
In regards to “Lords of Chaos,” the Hollywood money making machine seemed to change the real story a bit to elevate Rory Culkin’s appeal. In several interviews I’ve seen with the Norwegian black metal scene folks, the general consensus is that Øystein “Euronymous” Aarseth was the unlikeable one and Varg was considered to be the cool guy. I haven’t seen “Pure Fucking Mayhem” (2008) or “Until The Light Takes Us” (2008) in a while but I recall the real story of Mayhem being more fascinating than the story in “Lords” with it’s portrayal of “good guy” Euronymous. “Lords” would have been a much better film if they told the story how it really was. It would have made more money at the box office too without the black metal scene backlash saying the movie was bullshit. Just my opinion. I’ve seen “Lords” once. I’ll never watch it again.
Oh thats true, Euronymus was a massive dick in reality & Varg was nowhere near the bumbling dickhead he was portrayed in the film (my biggest gripe) but i treated it like a “party” movie, good soundtrack & fun, Thing you’d watch withs few
buddies after some beers & joints & i just treat it that way, Despite all his negative qualities & shortcomings, Varg was a very smart & articulate guy who also was very multi talented & he had balls & his own vision & Euronymus hated it & was consumed with jealousy, So that clash of personalities was always gonna end in tears & although touched on, is glossed over in LOC, you haven’t seen “Pure fucking mayhem” or “Until the light takes us” ?? Oh dude get on those, THE MOST amazing & engrossing stories & documentaries of any bands I’ve ever seen “Pure fucking Mayhem” was a rare 10 for me & UTLTU is damn close, Check them out Asap, Interested to hear your thoughts.
Euronymous*
“Pure Fucking Mayhem” or “Until The Light Takes Us” – I haven’t seen them IN A WHILE. My problem with “Lords” or any other type of bullshit is that I get tired of trying to figure out what is true and what is a lie because of someone’s agenda, usually to try to make themselves look better. “Lords” is sold as non-fiction which is total bullshit. If I want to be lied to or gaslighted, all I have to do is listen to Joe Biden talk about how great Bidenomics is. When I see a movie like “The Gray Man” I would rather not have to decipher what is a flat out lie because of some agenda by the director and what is the truth in a movie that is supposed to be non-fiction. Does every movie have to be “based” on a true story? It makes you wonder what bullshit and lies are being put forth as the truth in classrooms. A recent example: Former New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, a longtime fixture of Democratic politics died Friday at the age of 75. In the media they say “He lived his entire life in the service of others” and he helped 80 million families reconnect with their loved ones being held captive overseas. 80 million? That’s just straight up bullshit. What they fail to reveal in the media is that his net worth at the time of his death was $7 million. In reality, he was a liar and… Read more »
You know, a good example of how things get misinterpreted is when I said I haven’t seen “Pure Fucking Mayhem” (2008) or “Until The Light Takes Us” (2008)” but you didn’t notice that I said “in a while” right after that. Because of that error I will forever be known as the guy that has never seen “Pure Fucking Mayhem” (2008) or “Until The Light Takes Us” (2008).”
Lol yeah my bad, I read that 3 times & i can’t believe i still missed it, My apologies about that dude, I’m getting a bit more stupid daily.
a good watch
thanks effed up moderators
‘Hack the heads of little girls and put ’em on my wall.’ ~Glenn Danzig
He hates girls because he is ugly and they always avoided him
I think this movie is less disturbing than a typical Criminal Minds episode considering how sick Fish was.
So you wish they’d instead showed him decapitating naked children and eating their butts? is that what you’re trying to say.
Nah he probably just means that a little bit of gore in a story about a serial killer would add a bit to the film, Especially considering the nasty stuff the guy did, But your point is also spot on, its kinda hard to do that when its the story of a child killer (unless you’re a mid 90s aisian Cat 3 film maker,Those guys didn’t give a shit & had no chill ) to make a comparison i guess its a bit like The Zach Efron movie where he played Ted Bundy, They showed absolutely nothing regarding the murders or any violence or blood at all in that film, not even him approaching or having any interaction with his intended victims, so by the end when he was captured & awaiting execution you had a hard time believing the in what you know to be the character (maybe that was the point) but anyway i think a little blood or gore always usually helpful to a movie on the subject of killers & murder, yet its a tough one considering the delicate age of the victims & maybe they could’ve concentrated on other areas to bring the out how disturbing the whole thing was to make it less like a midday movie, after all a movie about such a sick & evil person should be shocking & disturbing with out being exploitative.
Another film recently uploaded onto this site “Tenderness of the wolves” handles the exact same subject matter well without ever becoming too unwatchable or exploitive and is still disturbing but not in bad taste. would recommend over this
Oh yeah the the Fritz harman one a few weeks back, i forgot about that one, but did catch it, good point, yes thats a perfect example.
Well, that sounds bad . Kinda strange but they do have the words “classy and disturbing” under the title there
Lol good point, i didn’t see that little comment on the movie pic at first, its disturbing but still classy yeah that sounds kinda odd, They don’t seem to fit in the same sentence do they? “Its totally disturbing, but in the most classy way” hahahaha
Now I’m trying to think of other movies that are classy and disturbing.
yes please
Hey Cole – you look like a retard in that gravatar picture. You don’t know shit about movies either.
