Plot – Spoilers:
Three women – all connected to the gruesome murder of a woman found with her body parts attached to mannequins – lead double lives exploring their sexuality that’s in contrast to their daily life.
Izumi, the slavish wife of a famous writer, finds her release when she’s invited into the world of porn. From playing the shy, reticent housewife who’s literally a slave to her husband’s needs, she begins dressing sexy before befriending Mitsuko who tests her limits.
Mitsuko, a professor of literature with an upperclass background, overloads on makeup to work the streets by night as a trashy whore. Her dead father used to paint her in the nude and one of his gifts to her, Kafka’s The Castle, has added to her confused madness as she stumbles in search of sexual debasement through the elusive memories of her father. And like the villagers in the novel, she too has lofty views that confuse her while also being adamant that they are the absolute truth.
Kazuko, the lead detective on the case, who’s used to subservient men at work, has a side relationship with a rude man who orders her around.
There’s also a pimp out of a J-Pop homage to A Clockwork Orange who likes to chuck paint bombs at women when he finds them sexy. That aside, this is another engrossing work from Sion Sono, the Japanese auteur-master of effed up cinema.
It’s too long cutting out some unnecessary parts would’ve made it less boring who even has the time to watch this
good flick.
Almost a minor master piece. They completely lost me towards the end, but is to be expected considering my cultural ignorance. The lack of a climactic ending seems fitting since life in general is an anticlimax. Either way, I’m not surprised the symbology went way over the heads of dim wits here. But then again with all the eye candy, what could anyone bitch about?

Have seen this before. Japanese schoolgirl uniforms are so hot. On a mannequin they’re even better. Mannequins are my next best option when finding dead bodies becomes hard. Loved the lady lecturer when she stripped her clothes off. I remember she had the body of a Japanese transsexual which makes it always hotter.
