A good movie, well produced. It seemed he was at peace in his own mind.

For his third feature (following The White Noise and The Edukators), Hans Weingartner has entered territory normally occupied by Lodge Kerrigan, whose films similarly trace marginalised, damaged protagonists while confronting us with our own feelings and prejudices about mental illness. Here combining the over-the-shoulder objectivity of Kerrigan’s Keane (2004) with the more fragmented subjectivity of his masterpiece Clean, Shaven (1995), Weingartner simultaneously offers an insider’s and outsider’s perspective on Martin’s experiences, forcing us to construct the deceptively straightforward narrative much as Martin builds the hut – from whatever materials can be found, put back together into some kind of working order. As Martin walks to and fro from urban settings to the Edenic countryside, Weingartner’s film also seems to meander and to drift a little too close to the sentimental – until a twist comes that forces the viewer to re-evaluate everything that has gone before and to question the apparent naturalism implied by DP Henner Besuch’s handheld tracking shots. Yet for all its satisfying plausibility, the twist is played too soon, and there is something rather disingenuous about the supposed ambiguity then cast over the rest of the film’s events – as though we are being invited to share in a perspective that we already, surely, know is false. Yet perhaps that is the whole point: the paradox of Martin’s predicament is that his illness and recovery are inextricable, so his condition both improves and deteriorates at the same time, as he learns to coexist comfortably with his own… Read more »

Rating system is really messed up on this site. Good movie, rating way too low. So 5 stars… and thanks EFM.

Director Hans Weingartner is a very good film maker. His first film “The White Sound” (2001) is about a mentally unstable young man who ingests magic mushrooms and never comes down from the high. Weingartner’s depiction of a schizophrenic with auditory hallucinations represents a plausible interpretation of what that illness may actually really be like.

“Hut in the Woods” falls a little bit short of expectations for me although I still enjoyed the film. Martin’s hallucinations of Viktor seem to be a real possibility but I’m a bit confused about Lena. Was she a hallucination as well? It’s still a pretty good picture. 3 and a half stars.

Great Movie ! sebastianwurm7 November 2011 I Loved the new Weingartner Movie ! Makes you think how we treat the “mentally disturbed ” or even what is mentally disturbed ??? You should definitely go and see it . If you liked ” Das weisse Rauschen ” and ” die fetten Jahre sind vorbei ” this is the Movie to see. Brilliant Actor Peter Schneider catches you with his performance . In the first part of the movie , we can see how his life is dramatically changing and the only solution society is giving him ,is drugs . As he decided to find his own way ,nobody can understand him. His only friend is a young ukranian Boy how is helping him and guiding him into nature where they are trying to find their way of living . 13 out of 18 found this helpful. Was this review helpful? The writer and director is Hans Weingartner and despite the age, it is actually still his most recent release. He is certainly not the most prolific filmmaker. It is also his least known full feature work, but this also may have to do with the fact that the lead actor is Peter Schneider and not a big name… Read more »
