Plot – Spoilers:
A melancholic tale of a small man who tries to be dignified in the face of subtle and blatant ridicule.
Marcello is a dwarf whose wealthy father was ashamed of him for years. Now with World War I on, Marcello is free to mingle with the wounded soldiers who lie sprawled in his estate that’s been requisitioned.
Marcello doesn’t have much expectations from the women who find it easy to look down on him, and the best he hopes for, is to lie on their breasts and ask them to put him to sleep.
The masculine soldiers though, enamour Marcello, and he considers it a matter of pride that one of them, Cesare, might even be his friend. Cesare introduces him to Maria, a prostitute at the local brothel, and Marcello struggles to dare that she might even fancy him.
Favorite Scene:
After an embarrassing first-time at the brothel, Marcello tries to walk away with dignity, but has to contend with the indignity of wading through a flock of sheep and a barking dog.
Marcello, a rich midget, falls short when he tries to woo Maria who is a prostitute at the local bordello. His “best friend,” the prostitutes and even some of the locals are in on a plan to flim flam the little twirp. It seems inevitable that shorty is going to get rolled but it turns out that Maria is a hooker with a heart of gold and she sacrifices her profession and her health to save the little rug rat. This is a good film. 4 stars.

That little piece of shit didn’t deserve that she gave him any kind of consideration. If he couldn’t sense how sincere she was and how she could really care for him and he brushed it away to push his needs forward, he does not deserve her good feelings. He is the kind of piece of shit whose brain is filled with ulterior motives that are more or less unconscious, but very powerful. And things can’ t end up well for you with this kind of people in your life, even when you’re not so innocent yourself – because something in their soul is basically rotten.
According to movie database, it says the original running time was supposed to be 1:39 minutes, this dubbed version says 1:33 minutes therefore the assumption is that the movie may be 6 minutes shorter than than the subtitled version. It looked like something was supposed to happened with the donkey brought up into the brothel by Austrian soldiers, and then that was it.
Enjoyable. For me all about deceit and trust and that wealth is nothing without health.
