Marquis is one of the strangest movies you’ll ever see with all the characters, humans in animal form.
Loosely set around the time the Marquis de Sade was imprisoned, he struggles to retain his sanity as he’s systemically denied writing material and ink. He keeps it together by constantly being in conversation with Colin – his cock. In some ways, his cock is his writing muse but also someone who’s desperate for his own independent identity. With a face that’s more human than Marquis, it’s a weird but brilliant satirical take on ‘thinking with your cock.’
There are other hilarious and tragically comical characters around the Marquis to capture a period of great political change in French history.
A fantastic, surreal look at the Marquis. Just the prosthetics are well made and bizarre. Definitely deserving of being on this site.
a few things that came to my attention: first I think characters portrayed as animals mean which characteristics is more dominant in each character for example The Marquis de Sade – Dog :lustful and loyal , Ambert – The Rat (Jailer) : Cunning, sneaky, opportunistic , justine – Cow : gullible and naïve, Juliette de Titane – The Horse : Strong, dominant, independent, Gaëtan de Préaubois – The Rooster (Governor) : Proud, authoritative, pompous the talking penis represents Sade’s sexual desires or rawness of his writings or perhaps his creative power him making a box for it means he is trying to express himself in a way that is acceptable to society him being in prison represents a lack of freedom of speech imposed by state or society him being accused of defecating on a cross means he has criticized Christianity Ambert the rat (jailor) represents the oppressive system which wants marquis to sodomize him which I think it means to use his creativity to serve him Justine represents people or perhaps naïve individuals as in one scene she is milked (exploited) by authorities she is also represents people’s hypocrisy, on one hand she admires Marquis works and on the other hand she accuses him of rape Juliette represents revolutionary aristocrats who has a twisted relationship with governor (probably meaning corrupt power dynamics) and she uses that relationship to overthrow the governor.
