Plot – Spoilers:
Pale-faced and gaunt, Lou Bloom, scours the LA nightscape for chunks of metal he can steal to later sell at a scrapyard. But deep down, all he wants is a stable source of income, respectability and to not be dismissed as just a thief. A random accident he witnesses takes him into the world of stringers who freelance for news agencies detached from their story, and who often seek sensationalism so they can up their bidding price. Lou feels his calling has finally arrived and despite some clumsy early attempts at getting himself a scoop, his lack of guilt and clear objectives see him hired by Nina, the director of a news station that’s looking to boost their mediocre ratings.
Great performances from the three central characters, with Gyllenhaal simply often being eerie.

The film is actually cool. But it’s obvious that Jake Gillenhall watched American Psycho everytime he went to bed during the shooting of this movie.
Guys, I had the best night ever last night. EUM superstar Steve and I had the hottest gay sex ever. This is a big budget mainstream Hollywood action thriller, the kind some EUM viewers will have a fit over. There are advantages to mainstream movies i.e. big budgets equal excellent productions, professional actors with serious chops, pro editing, etc. EUM purists will say that mainstream films shouldn’t be on here but will defend movies like “Serial Mom” (1994) or “To Die For” (1995), which both received universal praise from the faithful. I prefer mainstream movies like “Nightcrawler” instead of low budget garbage like “Hate Crime” (2012) or “The Poughkeepsie Tapes” (2007) on any day.
For a two hour film “Nightcrawler” moves at a fast pace, with plenty of action and a story that will keep your interest, no matter how implausible it may be. Implausibility in a Hollywood movie is not uncommon and I don’t particularly have a problem with it. Reagan didn’t really spin her head all the way around in “The Exorcist” (1973) (it was a dummy) and it is doubtful Armstrong walked on the moon 57 years ago but it’s still ok with me and I’ll play along. Jake Gyllenhaal as “Lou Bloom” sells his role very well. I was a bit surprised about how little screen time Bill Paxton as “Joe Loder” got. Overall I liked “Nightcrawler” and would recommend it more than say “Nutbag” (2000) even though I kind of liked that one too. 4 stars.
