This Director’s Cut of the 2001 original was released in 2004 and made clearer some of the scifi elements, which weren’t particularly great to begin with. Donnie Darko was anyway probably more about a suffering teenager stepping out of his world, which he already saw for all of its bullshit, and being given a chance to fix some of it and to experience not feeling alone, even if for a short while.
This film gets lavish praise by critics and mainstream hating EUM viewers alike (this movie is filled with mainstream nepo babies and established Hollywood mainstays). This is the 2nd time I’ve seen this and I feel the same way about it as I did the first time. A better title for this film would have been “Donnie Boredom” or “Corny Darko.” It’s just Hollywood psychobabble horseshit that I could really give a flying fuck about. I like Jake Gyllenhaal but this movie just doesn’t do anything for me. It’s just about as fucking boring as you can get. 2 stars.
