Owning Mahowny (2003)

Option 1Can't Watch?

Wait 30secs. Movie still not playing? Click the "Can't Watch?" tab.

If the movie didn't load, it means you are being blocked by a security service we use. This can happen for a number of reasons.

Click this first

A new tab will open and a basic security check like a captcha will be performed. After completing the check, close that page and return here.

Refresh this page. Wait 30 secs. The movie should load and you can just hit play.

If it still doesn't play, Click here to watch the movie

The movie should now start playing in a new tab of your browser or begin downloading to your device. This option has the minor disadvantage that English-language movies with optional subtitles in the movie player will not include these subs with this method.

The new system here has been designed keeping in mind even people with low internet speeds sub-8mbps. Even if you have a really bad connection, you should still be able to watch the movie without any issues if you:
Start the movie. Pause it. Wait for 30-45 seconds. Start playing again.

This 'Can't Watch' method really only works if it's your specific device/browser that's interfering with the player. There is no real advantage of speed here. Or if there is a temp network glitch or read lag from the server disk.

If you're still having problems, try using 'Incognito mode' in your browser. On iPhones, especially older ones, use Chrome instead of Safari. Might help.

IMPORTANT: Please make sure that the newly opened tab is not an ad popup asking you to download some software or whatever. Close any such popups and don't download any software - those are ads. Nothing is needed to be done by you other than to complete the security check which is often automated.

Plot – Spoilers:
Things seem to be looking up for recently-promoted banker, Mahowny. The bosses love him as does his girlfriend, despite his male friends thinking he walks around looking like a douchebag. The girlfriend’s even been talking about getting a new place so they can move in together. But Mahowny lives spartan. Thinks twice before eating fancy and drives a beatup car because all of his earnings go into the track. And when he’s not able to cover new bets, he hits the casino with money embezzled from loans written out to fake and real clients. Early into Mahowny’s time at the casino, he sees gambling junkies begging for a hit, but doesn’t identify with them at all and rather sees himself as someone simply trying to solve a financial shortfall.

Philip Seymour Hoffman takes the real story of Brian Molony and makes him instantly identifiable for anyone who’s had a gambling addiction. The rush that clouds the value of the big amounts you’re playing with. It’s not greed anymore beyond a point because you don’t really get what’s being staked. They’re just numbers without value until hindsight kicks in much much later. You go on and on just to maintain the rush without even realizing that’s all you’ve been doing.

Owning Mahowny is one of the greatest depictions of losing money because it also captures the feeling of needing to empty everything you have long after the hope of winning it all back has passed. Almost as if losing it all is the only way to finish what you started.

if you’re a fan of PSH, this is an absolute must watch. this one doesn’t get brought up as often when people talk about his films, but he portrays the character very well.

its no secret that gambling can become one of the most destructive addictions one can deal with, and with the pervasiveness of online casinos and sports betting apps, I worry that more people than ever are falling down this slippery slope. many movies have been made that center around drug addiction and alcoholism, but there aren’t many that center on the damaging effects that gambling can have on you and those around you if you aren’t careful.

this movie portrays the pains of a gambling addiction in a sincere in honest way, as only PSH could do. RIP king

It seems to me the movie’s all on Hoffman, but this doesn’t make it a bad movie since it’s enough well orchestrated to do exactly that: rest on the protagonist’s shoulder while assigning to everyone around him little conservative touches here and there just to keep it on track; which think about it might suit very well in a sort of visual metaphor the self-absorption of addiction. …Actually, pushing harder and awarely in that direction with clear vision is what could have turned the movie into something more. Mostly the other characters aren’t that real and deep but even when they lean toward the charicatural they don’t dive into that strongly enough so to be considered just a projection of the protagonist’s mind or sort of ghost to which he can’t give that much attention. Yea, they should be more ghostly, more “mute” or silenced, muffled, . Anyhow enjoyable and the real story behind it is strong (even if you shouldn’t completlly buy into the one-guilty/everyone-else-completely-innocent angle), and Hoffmann kicks it up a notch from being possibly too average or televisisch. It’s not something I’d rewatch, but I would just to hang out more with his Dan

Really good. Phillip Seymore Hoffman movies are usually good. This is like a cross between Glengarry Glen Ross, Margin Call and Before The Devil Knows You’re Dead. The music score sounds like it was done by the same guy that did Glengarry Glen Ross. No tits or ass, no violence, no car chases. Just a straight up drama based on a true story. I’m not fucking blown away by it like I was when I saw The Exorcist but I’d say it’s about 3 and a half stars. Would I say that it’s effed up in any way, shape or form? No, but I’m not the only person on Earth, now am I.
