We Are What We Are (2013)

Option 1Can't Watch?

Wait 30secs. Movie still not playing? Click the "Can't Watch?" tab.

If the movie didn't load, it means you are being blocked by a security service we use. This can happen for a number of reasons.

Click this first

A new tab will open and a basic security check like a captcha will be performed. After completing the check, close that page and return here.

Refresh this page. Wait 10 secs. The movie should load and you can just hit play.

If it still doesn't play, Click here to watch the movie

The movie should now start playing in a new tab of your browser or begin downloading to your device.

If you're still having problems, try using 'Incognito mode' in your browser. On iPhones, especially older ones, use Chrome instead of Safari. Might help.

IMPORTANT: Please make sure that the newly opened tab is not an ad popup asking you to download some software or whatever. Close any such popups and don't download any software - those are ads. Nothing is needed to be done by you other than to complete the security check which is often automated.

This last option has the minor disadvantage that English-language movies with optional subtitles in the movie player will not include these subs.

AKA:
Directed by: Jim Mickle
Starring: Bill Sage (Dad), Ambyr Childers (Iris), Julia Garner (Rose), Jack Gore (Rory), Wyatt Russell (Anders), Kelly McGillis (Marge), Michael Parks (Doc), Nick Damici (Sheriff)
Country: United States
Language: English (Optional Eng Subs)
Runtime: 01:45:03
Genres: Siblings-Family, Gruesome, Cannibalism

Plot – Spoilers:
The American remake of the Mexican film, We Are What We Are maintains the same premise of an isolated family that indulges in cannibalism as part of a religious tradition going back to the late 18th century. But it’s also radically different in certain tangents that it goes off on and explores the history behind why they are the way they are. There are also more distractions from the outside world here and the motivation for those snooping around them is also different here.

If you haven’t watched either, we’d recommend watching the original first, because this is one of those very rare situations where the remake didn’t manage to fuck up the original. In fact, this American remake might even be better, with a more appetizing finale.

In the description it reads: “If you haven’t watched either, we’d recommend watching the original first, because this is one of those very rare situations where the remake didn’t manage to fuck up the original. In fact, this American remake might even be better, with a more appetizing finale.” I did as instructed and watched “Somos Lo Que Hay”(2010) first. I wouldn’t say the American version is better. I would say the opposite but they are both pretty good.

This one, “We Are What We Are” (2013) is a little too far out and over the top in a plausibility sense but I felt that “Somos Lo Que Hay” (2010) was more likely to be something that really could or has happened, considering the financial issues, the location in Mexico and the mental issues of the dad and the rest of the family. “We Are What We Are” led me to discover Kuru disease. Kuru disease in humans is caused by infectious, misfolded proteins called prions, transmitted through the ritualistic consumption of infected human brain tissue, primarily during cannibalistic funeral practices by the Fore people of Papua New Guinea. These prions accumulate in the brain, causing it to become spongy (spongiform encephalopathy) and leading to severe neurological damage, tremors, and eventual death.

I’m going to give both films just a cunt hair over 4 stars but I would say “Somos Lo Que Hay” is the superior of the two.

I only consume tuna and chicken. The smell of beef/steak cooking makes me feel very ill.

Of course they make the family White when it’s Jews who are cannibals by religious, ethnic, and genetic predisposition. And that colossal goat-fuck at the end . . . Oy vey.

I agree. This is most definitely superior to the original. Usually we murricans are great at ruining movies. Now I feel like eating someone.
