Plot – Spoilers:
In an Estonian school, everyone’s trying to fit in. Including the maker of this film – using cuts and techniques that were already going cringe in 2007. But that’s the only real whinge possible about one of the landmark world movies on school bullying.
Joosep makes decent buck on the side, freelancing for design and web projects, but is a loner at school and often picked on. But the casual mocking escalates into daily bullying when a locker-room slur thrown at the class-chad, Anders, hits hard. Joosep is stripped and thrown into the girls room. But during the ensuing chaos, Kaspar, who’s part of the chad-gang, is made to feel ashamed by his girlfriend’s accusing looks. Something flips in Kaspar and he doesn’t feel compelled anymore to blindly follow Anders’ orders.
Kaspar, despite being a country boy living with his grandma, has no problems fitting in, because he has certain abilities, including a pair. His girlfriend is from the creamy top percent, so it’s surprising to the whole class when he begins to stand with the bullied boy. Joosep’s sufferings compound when one of the teachers at school opts not to look away and punishes the rest of the class for a day. But the more Joosep is isolated and bullied, the more Kaspar considers it a matter of honour to look out for him.
Klass carries the template of almost every school – the sidekicks with zero individuality, the big deal made of dumb rumours if they’re propagated by the right kids, school elders with their biases based on the family backgrounds and academics of students, and of course, the seemingly bottomless nature of bullying, where the bottom is often found only when something dramatic happens.
