Shilled as the prequel to Carved, not sure why, because the backstory was already covered there.
Teenager Mayumi from a small town is the fastest runner at school. As one of the popular girls, she’s snarky to her admirers but nervous around her crush, who though moving away to Tokyo, seems keen. So things are looking up. She’s even about to get the room she always wanted after her older sister’s wedding. But a few days later, a jilted ex of her sister breaks in, mistakes Mayumi for the sister and dumps acid on her.
Scarred and low on confidence, Mayumi finds she doesn’t have too many friends anymore and sinks further into depression despite the best efforts by her sisters and starts to wonder if she is pretty enough.
With a handycam tone to it, this is strangely enjoyable for a while before spiraling down slasher absurdities.
I liked this one better than “Carved: Slit-Mouthed Woman” (2007) while I was duped in to believing it was based on a true story. Motherfuckers who splash acid in people’s faces should have the same thing done to them. It’s fucking cruel. I’m sure someone may have been attacked with acid at some point in time in Japan but when Mayumi Sawada was resurrected from the grave and went on a murderous killing spree that’s where the true story ended for me. It’s still better than the first one. 2 and a half stars.

Mayumi does not deserve to be Kuchisake-onna! Mayuri is innocent! Justice for Mayumi! Mayumi did nothing wrong!

Both movies are solid but almost as different as Jason Takes Manhattan and Jason Goes to Hell. Tara A. Devlin has a great YT channel covering Japanese urban legends etc. if anyone’s interested. Nice quality upload btw. ๐ Cheers.
