Plot – Spoilers:
Cold Fish is what happens when an artist at his peak makes an effed up movie.
Shamoto runs a small shop selling exotic fish with his second wife Aiko. He’s a fairly simple man with simple troubles. His pleasures include spending romantic evenings at the local planetarium, while his troubles revolve around his daughter Mitsuko who hates her stepmom. He is so conscious of their rift that he even feels awkward to get frisky with his wife while Mitsuko is under the same roof.
When Mitsuko is caught shoplifting, an excessively gregarious old man Murata comes to the family’s rescue. Murata is the owner of an overpoweringly grand tropical fish shop and Shamoto feels more and more like a little man in his presence. But wife and daughter seem impressed.
If you crave beautiful aesthetics and great bizarre acting in the effed up, it’s harder to reach beyond Cold Fish.
Now that’s a graphic ending.

The way this movie bounces tones and the way it wraps it all up is fucking brilliant. It was also crazy how over the top yet how raw and real the Murata character was. This was nuts.

When people ask me what is my Favourite Movie i always tell that i Have many but start with this Cold fish.
I Love de Genres of Human corruption, the world between Nice and Good. The pure becoming Corruptes, the vunerabilitys of The Humans and all this little takes on life.

this was sad as fuck i rlly liked the main character wtf
in my opinion, this movie is a decent movie overall! if youre a gore fanatic like me, i would most certainly recommend it. however, for me personally, i wish they would have shown more of the dismembering. i feel like its almost wasted potential to state that they dismember people and then hardly ever show it because they KNOW thats what people want to see lol plus it makes the movie more interesting overall. it seems to me that they wanted to focus more on the rape/sex scenes which like okay whatever. im not really a huge fan of rape scenes in extreme cinema because they are almost always insufferable and unnecessary. i dont think in order for something to be extreme and disturbing, a rape scene is necessary. so i wasnt really a big fan of that aspect of the movie. i also feel as though i wouldve liked more background information on murata and how his trauma turned him into the person he is today. shamoto as well shouldve had a huge breakdown and i wouldve liked to see him kind of have a switch off?? like he should of had his own scene that shows how he made the decision to treat everyone in his life like shit and then kill himself lol. i feel like hte huge change in shamoto’s character was just so empty and sudden to the point i had to rewind to make sure i didnt miss anything lol. i also wouldve liked… Read more »

Holy shit. That was a total blast. hahaha. 9/10 Tbh, Shamoto should’ve killed the daughter too or at least scared the shit out of her. I dunno what’s worse between the two: a parentless life awaiting of her or a quick painful death. Seriously though, it’s commendable that he finally got to decide something in his life. It’s just sucks that he killed himself when he realized that life for him is nothing but pain/hurtful. For all that guts he managed to summon there when he killed Murata and his wife, he actually had an option to start a new life. He could have divorce his second wife, support his daughter till college (if their family relationship won’t really work out), and then cut all ties with them since it’s toxic anyways. Another thing is that he can chose to expose shack without making himself looked like their accomplice (not that he was willing in the first place), or frankly confess as a witness for the recent murder cases (he might be judge guilty with some crime charges but might also end with a shorter jail sentence). However, the man is so pure that he couldn’t withstand going back to his usual life while having a trauma of being an accomplice of murder. Like a fish exposed to osmotic shock, he cannot live with that kind of life so he killed himself. Wow, this is one hell of a movie. At first it seemed a bit slow, but it more than makes up for it as the movie progresses. Interesting to see the transformation of the main character and the commentary on the views on traditional vs. non-traditional family life. 5 out of 5 stars for sure, definitely worth the watch.
Sion Sono directed this masterpiece flawlessly. Mitsuru’s performance summoned many emotions within, his fragility broke resoundingly <3
