The fifth instalment in the Death File series turns its attention to Brazil. This was probably influenced by the studio setting up a Brazilian arm to distribute Portuguese dubs of their movies, and Death File – 5 became the first release there, under the title, Arquivos da Morte – O Original.
The filmmakers appear to have actually traveled to Brazil to find footage rather than relying on stock material from obscure Asian news companies or government records. But this approach also means that being a little low on authentic footage, they spend time giving us the sights and sounds of the country and some pointless interviews like one with an actor where he describes a robbery attempt on his daughter. There’s another with some random kid talking about how she feels safe compared to other kids her age. Pervily, the camera also leers at the legs of young schoolgirls under the garb of commenting on the rise in sexual attacks. Finally, the makers give us a little sex tape where it seems one of them fucks a prostitute.
Apart from this tour diary though, and getting to what you’re probably here for, there are:
Gang and robbery-related murder scenes.
Battered dead people lying in streets with trickles of drainwater giving them company. Or by the side of dirty canals, while onlookers wait for the authorities to take the bodies away in crude boxes.
Rape and suicide deaths scattered across fields and patios.
Favela raids.
Extended scene-breaks that include a journalist providing historical context to modern-day violence in Brazil, a bored cop who’d rather write some notes than talk to the makers, the wife and baby of a man who committed suicide reporting at the local police station.
There is a decent amount of gore distributed among all the sights and sounds of Brazil, but they eventually make this really worthwhile towards the end, as we watch a couple of workers struggle to get decomposed bodies with painted-white swollen eyeballs out of the boot of a car, armed with only newspapers instead of gloves, as the stench makes every onlooker cover their nose and spit on the ground. It’s almost like a standalone short film, this.
