Peeping Tom (1960)

Option 1Can't Watch?

Wait 30secs. Movie still not playing? Click the "Can't Watch?" tab.

If the movie didn't load, it means you are being blocked by a security service we use. This can happen for a number of reasons.

Click this first

A new tab will open and a basic security check like a captcha will be performed. After completing the check, close that page and return here.

Refresh this page. Wait 30 secs. The movie should load and you can just hit play.

If it still doesn't play, Click here to watch the movie

The movie should now start playing in a new tab of your browser or begin downloading to your device. This option has the minor disadvantage that English-language movies with optional subtitles in the movie player will not include these subs with this method.

The new system here has been designed keeping in mind even people with low internet speeds sub-8mbps. Even if you have a really bad connection, you should still be able to watch the movie without any issues if you:
Start the movie. Pause it. Wait for 30-45 seconds. Start playing again.

This 'Can't Watch' method really only works if it's your specific device/browser that's interfering with the player. There is no real advantage of speed here. Or if there is a temp network glitch or read lag from the server disk.

If you're still having problems, try using 'Incognito mode' in your browser. On iPhones, especially older ones, use Chrome instead of Safari. Might help.

IMPORTANT: Please make sure that the newly opened tab is not an ad popup asking you to download some software or whatever. Close any such popups and don't download any software - those are ads. Nothing is needed to be done by you other than to complete the security check which is often automated.

AKA:
Directed by: Michael Powell
Starring: Karlheinz Böhm (Mark), Anna Massey (Helen), Moira Shearer (Vivian)
Country: UK
Language: English
Runtime: 01:41:36
Genres: Snuff, Voyeur, Domestic Abuse

Plot – Spoilers:
A young photographer Mark works at a film studio while also shooting sexy pinups on the side. It’s not for the money, as he earns substantial rent from letting out rooms in his inherited house. His real ambition is to make a perfect docudrama capturing fear at its purest. In this pursuit, he’s been killing women with a modified camera while resurrecting ghosts from a childhood of abuse. Mark is getting close to finishing his magnum opus, when his curious tenant Helen befriends him…

Though acclaimed now, Peeping Tom almost destroyed director Michael Powell’s career at the time.

Random Thought – Massive Spoiler:
Right at the end, when Helen passionately grabs Mark from behind, she almost ends up skewering him on the tripod spike. Wonder if that was a planned move or whether the actor was taken by surprise.

This film is worth watching just for Viv’s spectacular dance performance. This movie sunk director Michael Powell’s career because it was so controversial at the time. It’s a very odd story but I’m not sure what put everyone in such a huff about it. It’s a decent film. Viv’s spectacular dance performance gets 5 stars. The movie gets 3 stars.

Actor Jack Watson, who plays the part of “Chief Insp. Gregg,” was in a great film directed by Sydney Lumet called “The Hill” (1965) starring Sean Connery. Watson portrays “Private Jock McGrath,” one of the new prisoners trapped in a brutal British military prison in North Africa who are assigned to the care of the sadistic ex-civilian prison guard Staff Sergeant Williams. It’s a great prison drama.

An interesting movie. Hard to fathom today why it caused such a furor in it’s time as it is very, very tame compared with what was to follow.

In the first shots, the right leg stocking does not have a seam. Further along it shows both with seams. Continuity in those days obviously wasn’t an issue.
